What the assistants say
This is a snapshot from 29 September 2026: 250 benchmark questions put to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok, 1,250 answers in all. No question named a brand. Where the question was about shopping, service or returns, the answers reached for retailers. Sephora was named in 76% of answers on retail and shopping experience, Ulta Beauty in 76%. On customer service, Sephora appeared in 63% and Ulta in 55%.
Where the question was about scale, leadership or innovation, the answers reached for L'Oréal. It appeared in 81% of leadership-and-scale answers, with Estée Lauder in 59%. L'Oréal also led the innovation questions at 34%. On efficacy and ingredients the lead passed to skincare names. CeraVe appeared in 39% of efficacy answers and Neutrogena in 32%. CeraVe also topped trust and value.
The answers often declined to crown anyone. Perplexity's answer on trusted brands opened by saying there is no single winner, and several other answers hedged the same way. Even so, the same handful of names filled the lists.
Ulta Beauty (Ulta) is the largest beauty retailer in America.
Who owns the answer, and why
Across all 1,250 answers, Sephora was named in 321, Ulta Beauty in 301 and L'Oréal in 300. Estée Lauder followed with 193 and CeraVe with 165. Grok named every one of these brands more often than any other assistant did. Sephora appeared in 91 Grok answers against 50 from Perplexity.
Most mentions carry no stated reason. The classification labels the majority of each top brand's credits "Not Substantive", meaning the brand appears in a list without a specific attribute. Where a reason was recorded, it differs by brand. Sephora and Ulta were credited for Customer Experience. L'Oréal was credited for Financial Performance and Safety & Compliance. CeraVe's credits were Price & Value. Clinique's most frequent credit was Safety & Compliance, and Neutrogena's was also Safety & Compliance.
In the answer sample, many recommended names are outside the tracked brand list. They include La Roche-Posay, Vanicream, Olaplex, Nivea, Garnier, Credo Beauty, Nordstrom and Dermstore. Rare Beauty, Glossier and Fenty Beauty were each named in under 80 answers, mostly as list items. In the sample, Rare Beauty and Fenty Beauty appeared alongside larger players when the question was about revenue, and Fenty also appeared on shade inclusivity.
There isn’t one universal “most trusted” beauty brand—the leaders vary by country, age group, and product category.
What the press is covering
In the PeakMetrics news index over the past 30 days, the retailers lead on volume. Sephora had 5,755 mentions and Ulta Beauty 5,135, followed by L'Oréal at 4,250 and Estée Lauder at 3,679. Sephora's recent headlines are about a TikTok Shop launch, Europe "quiet hours" and brand debuts. Ulta's are dominated by brand partnership announcements and a stock-valuation story.
L'Oréal's headlines mix product launches and Paris runway events with a story about Arizona accusing the company of concealing cancer risks linked to hair relaxers. Neutrogena's mix a sunscreen technology launch with a class-action settlement notice and a recall trial verdict. Estée Lauder's include a breast cancer research initiative, leadership appointments and a partnership with Profound to shape how its brands appear on AI search platforms. e.l.f. Beauty coverage is heavily financial, with momentum-stock and investment-case pieces. CeraVe's is about a new serum and a Pakistan distribution deal.
…have revolutionized affordable skincare by focusing on proven ingredients rather than fancy packaging.
Where the two stories diverge
CeraVe is the clearest gap. It was named in 165 answers and led the trust, value and efficacy questions. It had 861 news mentions and 73 with the brand in the headline, well below Estée Lauder's 3,679 and 844, even though Estée Lauder was named in only modestly more answers. The efficacy narrative the assistants attach to CeraVe is not one the press is producing at volume.
The reverse pattern shows in litigation and safety. The press carries the Arizona hair-relaxer accusation against L'Oréal and the Neutrogena recall trial and settlement notices. In this snapshot, Gemini's and Grok's answers on contamination lawsuits named L'Oréal, Dove and Neutrogena. The avoid-and-risk questions most often named Sephora (22%), L'Oréal (19%) and Ulta Beauty (16%), which reflects how often they appear in any broad answer as much as any specific concern.
Some press counts are noisy. Headline volume for Glossier, The Ordinary and Olay includes stories about glossier hair, a TV series and a furniture company, so their mentions should be read with care. Rare Beauty shows 1,076 mentions against only 29 answers naming it.
What this means for comms teams
The answers draw on a different source mix than a media list. In the cited-domain data, News made up 47% of citations, Community 19%, Other 19% and Owned 14%. The most cited domains were forbes.com, ulta.com, reddit.com, allure.com and sephora.com. Retailers' own sites appear among the top sources, and so do Reddit threads and beauty editorial, which press monitoring alone does not show.
Teams should check which lane the assistants put their brand in, since the same company can appear as a retail answer, a scale answer or a safety answer depending on the question. Litigation and recall stories in the news index also surfaced as context in the safety and contamination answers. These are single-run answers, and live responses vary, so treat them as a baseline to re-measure rather than a ranking.
