How the answers frame Maybelline
This snapshot was measured on 2026-09-29 across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok, using 250 benchmark questions that never named a brand. Maybelline was named in 81 of the 1,250 answers. Gemini and Grok named it in 24 each, Claude in 13, Perplexity in 12 and ChatGPT in 8. Sephora, Ulta Beauty and L'Oréal each appeared in roughly 300 or more answers.
The stored answers place Maybelline as the budget reference point. Claude's answer to "Are there good dupes for high-end foundation that cost under $15?" listed Maybelline Superstay as a dupe and Fit Me Matte + Poreless as its pick for best under $15. Gemini's cheapest-makeup answer grouped it with e.l.f., NYX and Milani as a drugstore staple. Grok's answer on beauty chains listed it among the affordable mass brands Ulta carries and Sephora largely skips.
A second framing is shade range. Perplexity's answer on inclusive foundation shades named Maybelline alongside Fenty Beauty, MAC and Estée Lauder. Its answer on shade-matching technology credited Maybelline with a selfie-based online shade finder. Perplexity's trust answer cited a consumer ranking with Maybelline third, and a category survey that named it for mascara.
Visibility varied by question type. Maybelline showed up most in leadership (15%), value (14%), reliability (12%) and trust (11%) questions. It was near zero on ingredient transparency (0%), product efficacy (1%) and employer questions (1%). Of the credit categories recorded, "Not Substantive" was the largest, a sign that many mentions were passing name-checks.
Not every mention was flattering. Grok's answer on shade consistency listed Maybelline among brands where consumers report batch-to-batch variation, alongside Charlotte Tilbury, Armani, Fenty, MAC, Urban Decay and Dior. Gemini's lawsuit answer also had Maybelline in its list of named brands, although the visible text of that stored answer centers on other companies.

What the press is saying
The PeakMetrics news index recorded 761 Maybelline mentions in the last 30 days, 38 of them with the brand in the headline. All five recent headlines in the data are the same release, repeated across local news sites: Maybelline New York handing the mic to four Canadian artists to reimagine its jingle for "The Power of Maybe."
That volume is well below the largest retailers and parents in the set: Sephora at 5,755 mentions, Ulta Beauty at 5,135 and L'Oréal at 4,250. It sits close to Fenty Beauty (641), Glossier (749) and The Ordinary (773).

The gap
The press storyline in this window is brand marketing, a music-led campaign carried mostly through syndicated pickups. The AI storyline is functional: where to buy cheap makeup, which foundation costs under $15, which brand has wide shade options.
Neither storyline contains the other. None of the campaign language appears in the stored answers. Meanwhile the themes the answers used, price, shade range and drugstore trust, are not what the recent headlines were about.
Press volume and AI visibility also do not track each other in this set. CeraVe was named in 165 answers on 861 news mentions, while Olay was named in 46 on 1,502. Maybelline's 81 answers on 761 mentions falls between them. The pattern in this snapshot is that news coverage does not predict how often an assistant names a brand.
No makeup brand is entirely immune to batch-to-batch shade variation…
What to watch
Treat this as one snapshot. Live answers vary between runs, so the useful signal is the framing, not the counts.
First, the value and shade-range framing is consistent across Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity, but it depends on being a drugstore comparison point. Questions about ingredient transparency and product efficacy produced almost no Maybelline visibility, so a comms team could check what content exists on those topics.
Second, the assistants differ. ChatGPT named Maybelline in far fewer answers than Gemini or Grok, so the same category question can produce a different brand set depending on the assistant.
Third, check which sources feed the shade-consistency and lawsuit-adjacent answers. Grok's version drew on consumer forum threads, and those are not the channels a syndicated campaign release reaches.
