How the answers frame e.l.f. Beauty
PeakMetrics asked 250 category questions that never named a brand, across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok, on 2026-09-29. e.l.f. Beauty was named in 111 of the 1,250 answers. Grok carried the most, at 44 of 250. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini each named the brand in 18, and Perplexity in 13. This is one snapshot of live answers, and the spread between assistants may shift from run to run.
The context is mostly price and retail. Grok's answer on big beauty chains said Ulta carries affordable drugstore and mass brands "(e.g., e.l.f., NYX, Maybelline, CoverGirl)" that Sephora largely skips. Gemini's answer on cheap online makeup listed e.l.f. among everyday drugstore staples. In Gemini's investor answer, e.l.f. was described as known for a "prestige-quality-at-an-accessible-price" model with younger, value-conscious consumers. The brand's highest visibility by question intent was leadership at 26%, followed by value at 17%, sustainability at 16% and employer at 15%.
Visibility fell away on the questions where a shopper is judging the product itself. Product efficacy was 0%. Avoid and ingredient transparency were each 1%. Reliability and safety were each 2%. The credit tags attached to the brand were few and thin: Not Substantive (4), Price & Value (2) and Customer Experience (1).
Perplexity's answer on money-back guarantees named e.l.f. as a narrow case rather than a headline option. It said the brand's refund covers certain complexion products bought on its own website, when the color is wrong, within 30 days.

What the press is saying
The PeakMetrics news index recorded 1,977 mentions of e.l.f. Beauty in the last 30 days. 681 of them had the brand in the headline. Recent headlines lean toward markets and expansion: a "strong momentum stock" piece on nasdaq.com, a Kalkine Media item on the changing investment case, and a report of an SVP of Operations selling shares.
The other storylines are a Brazil launch exclusively with Sephora and a Change the Board Game event at the University of California, Berkeley. Both come from the brand's own announcements.
This is much narrower than a general money-back guarantee.
The gap
The press story is about the company as an investment and a growing retail business. The answer story is about the brand as a low-price makeup option that shoppers meet at Ulta, Target or Walmart. Only Gemini's investor answer touched the financial angle, and it framed e.l.f. through brand reputation and price positioning.
Volume differs too. In this snapshot, Sephora (321 answers, 5,755 news mentions) and Ulta Beauty (301 answers, 5,135) led on both measures. e.l.f. sat between them and the pack, with 111 answers and 1,977 news mentions. CeraVe was named in 165 answers on 861 news mentions, so heavy news volume did not translate one-for-one into answer presence in this data.
What to watch
A comms team would read this snapshot as evidence that the assistants have a clear price-and-value frame for the brand and little to say about efficacy, ingredients or safety. Those are the questions where a shopper compares products, and the brand was close to invisible on them here.
Two things to track in later runs: whether the brand's presence stays concentrated in one assistant, since Grok accounted for the largest share here, and whether the retail-and-price framing holds. Treat these figures as a single dated sample rather than a trend.
