How the answers frame Neutrogena
This is a snapshot from 2026-09-29: 250 category questions, none naming a brand, put to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok. Neutrogena was named in 92 of the 1,250 answers. By provider that was Grok 30, Gemini 19, Claude 16, ChatGPT 15 and Perplexity 12, each out of 250. Its visibility was highest on product-efficacy questions (32%) and safety questions (14%). It was at or near zero on service, employer and innovation questions.
Two storylines run through the 13 stored answers we reviewed. In the first, Neutrogena is an everyday basic. Gemini's drugstore answer listed it alongside CeraVe, La Roche-Posay, The Ordinary and Eucerin. Perplexity credited it for facial cleanser in a category survey and named its T/Sal shampoo for thick flakes. Claude's device answer listed Neutrogena Skin360 among smart skincare products. ChatGPT included it in a three-step budget routine with CeraVe.
In the second storyline, Neutrogena appears as an example in recall and lawsuit answers. ChatGPT's recall answer, Grok's recall answer and Gemini's lawsuit answer each tied the brand to benzene in aerosol sunscreens. Grok's lawsuit answer grouped it under Johnson & Johnson's talc litigation. The brand's credited attributes in the data are few and skew toward safety and compliance, with four credits there against one for reliability and operations.
A classic, reliable brand that excels in hydration (e.g., the Hydro Boost line) and basic staples like gentle cleansers and sunscreens.
What the press is saying
PeakMetrics' news index logged 948 mentions of Neutrogena over the last 30 days, 75 of them with the brand in the headline. The headlines cover four things. One is a class action settlement notice for people who used Skin360 skin assessments. Another is the launch of a new sunscreen technology called Cloud-Tech. A third is a law.com item on a Philadelphia defense verdict in the first Neutrogena sunscreen recall trial. The fourth is retail coupon coverage.
In this snapshot, Neutrogena's news volume sits in the same range as Dove and Clinique and is well below Sephora, Ulta Beauty and L'Oréal. Its news count is close to that of CeraVe (861), which was named in more answers (165 against 92).
Multiple aerosol sunscreens recalled in 2021 (and related alerts) due to low levels of benzene.
The gap
The press story is current and specific: a trial outcome, a settlement notice and a launch. In the answers we reviewed, the safety story is the 2021 aerosol benzene recall, and it is told as a settled fact about the brand. None of the stored answers mentioned the recall trial verdict, the Cloud-Tech launch or the Skin360 settlement.
Skin360 is the one product that appears in both places. Claude listed it as a smart skincare device, while the press headlines about it concern a class action settlement. The launch coverage does not appear to have reached these answers, at least in the sample we read.
What to watch
For a comms team, the takeaway from this snapshot is where the brand appears. It shows up when people ask what works and when they ask about recalls and lawsuits. It barely shows up on innovation or trust questions, where a launch like Cloud-Tech would be expected to matter. These are single runs, and live answers vary between runs, so treat the figures as a starting point rather than a ranking.
Worth tracking over repeated benchmark questions: whether the recall trial outcome and new product coverage begin to appear in recall answers, and which cited domains the assistants use when they describe Neutrogena's safety history. The cited domains in these answers included fda.gov and consumer or legal sites, and those sources may shape the story more than current press does.
