How the answers frame The Ordinary
This snapshot covers 250 benchmark questions put to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok on 2026-09-29, none of which named a brand. The Ordinary appeared in 69 of the 1,250 answers. By provider, that was Grok 26, ChatGPT 14, Claude 14, Gemini 10 and Perplexity 5, each out of 250. Visibility by question intent peaked at 12% for ingredient transparency and product efficacy and 10% for value. It was 0% for safety and shopping experience. The brand's credits in the data were thin: Price & Value (2) and Not Substantive (2).
In the five stored answers, the frame is consistent. On drugstore questions, Claude wrote that "CeraVe, La Roche-Posay, and The Ordinary have revolutionized affordable skincare by focusing on proven ingredients rather than fancy packaging." Gemini described it as "Known for its minimalist, ingredient-focused approach" at "a very low price point." In the retinol answer, Claude called The Ordinary's 0.2% retinol in squalane the "least expensive way" for a first-time user to start. In each case the brand sits in a list, usually next to CeraVe.
In two answers it appeared with less weight. In a Claude answer about entry-level marketing jobs, it was one of the "Direct-to-consumer brands" at the end of a list of employers. In a Claude answer about clean beauty, it got a single line about "honesty and transparency," after longer entries for Credo Beauty, Beautycounter and others.
CeraVe, La Roche-Posay, and The Ordinary** have revolutionized affordable skincare by focusing on proven ingredients rather than fancy packaging.
What the press is saying
The PeakMetrics news index shows 773 mentions of The Ordinary in the last 30 days, and only 26 of them carry the brand in the headline. Much of that count is not about the skincare brand. Recent headlines include a live-action series titled The Ordinary Jackpot, a review of a Nigerian book, and a Johannesburg event piece about escaping "the ordinary." The brand-relevant items are a passport magazine piece on vegan hydration and a Pinterest-hosted post about the Multi-Peptide Eye Serum.
The name is a common phrase, so the press count is noisy. Read alongside the peer set, 773 mentions is modest next to Sephora (5,755), Ulta Beauty (5,135) and L'Oréal (4,250). It is close to Glossier (749) and Maybelline (761).
Known for its minimalist, ingredient-focused approach.
The gap
The press story is scattered and largely off-topic, with a few product-led items. The AI story is narrow and consistent: low price, simple actives, ingredient focus. The assistants did not draw on news about the brand. They described it through what it sells and what it costs.
Visibility is also uneven. The Ordinary was named in 69 answers, well behind CeraVe at 165 and the retailers and conglomerates above 300, even though its news count is close to or above some brands that appeared less often (Glossier, Rare Beauty). Press volume and AI visibility do not track each other here.
What to watch
A comms team would note that the value and ingredient frame is the one the assistants reached for, and that the brand is largely absent from safety, service and shopping-experience questions in this snapshot. Those are gaps in these answers, not verdicts on the brand.
Grok named the brand far more often than Perplexity did. Provider-level differences are worth tracking across repeated runs, since live answers vary between runs and this is a single snapshot. It is also worth checking whether name collisions with the phrase "the ordinary" distort any press monitoring the team relies on.
