How the answers frame Ulta Beauty
This is a snapshot from 2026-09-29: 250 benchmark questions put to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok, none naming a brand. Ulta Beauty was named in 301 of the 1,250 answers. By provider that was Grok 82 of 250, ChatGPT 70, Gemini 65, Claude 44 and Perplexity 40.
The context was consistently retail. Ulta showed up most on shopping-experience questions (visibility 76%) and service questions (55%), then on employer (40%) and leadership (33%) questions. It barely appeared on ingredient transparency (1%) or product efficacy (2%), and reliability (8%) and trust (17%) were also low. In the answers, Ulta is a place to buy beauty products, not a name credited with how the products perform.
In the sample of 11 stored answers, Ulta usually sits beside Sephora. Claude's answer on shipping and returns listed Ulta's shipping tiers and a 60-day return policy. Grok's answer on refunds named Ulta and Nordstrom for low-hassle returns. Grok's price comparison said Ulta was 'typically cheaper overall for most shoppers', and its answer on the largest US beauty retailer named Ulta outright. Gemini's investor answer put Ulta in the 'established industry giants' group and tied its reputation to a 'superstore' model with in-store services.
The tags attached to Ulta were few. Not Substantive (5) was the largest, followed by Customer Experience (3), Price & Value (2) and Financial Performance (1). ChatGPT's app question named only Ulta and Sephora, and its answer led with Sephora's personalization and its ChatGPT app.
Ulta Beauty (Ulta) is the largest beauty retailer in America.
What the press is saying
The PeakMetrics news index shows 5,135 mentions of Ulta Beauty over the last 30 days, 914 of them with the brand in the headline. That is the second-highest total among the 15 beauty peers listed, behind Sephora at 5,755.
The recent headlines are mostly about other brands using Ulta as a distribution channel. COSRX is bringing a lip collection to Ulta stores. Darkfin Labs is launching on Ulta. Wavytalk is expanding its Ulta partnership with a nationwide in-store debut. Another headline ranks the top wellness brands at Ulta for August. The remaining headline in the sample is a financial one, saying Ulta's stock 'could be overvalued' on raised 2026 guidance.

The gap
The press story is about supply and money: which brands are launching at Ulta, and how the shares are priced. The AI story is about the customer: how easy it is to return things, how it compares with Sephora on price, and how big it is. Only one tag on Ulta in this snapshot was about financial performance, and none was about brand launches or partnerships.
Press volume and answer volume line up at the top of the category. Ulta and Sephora rank first and second on both measures, and L'Oréal sits close behind on appearances. Press attention is not what separates them. The difference is the kind of question each name comes up for. Ulta's visibility is concentrated in service and shopping questions and thin where the question is about what the products do.
What to watch
Comms teams at Ulta could take three things from this snapshot. First, the assistants' return-policy and price details appear to come from third-party comparison pages and shopping guides, so those pages carry much of the narrative. Second, the pairing with Sephora is the default frame, and ChatGPT's app answer shows a competitor's AI initiative can take the lead position in Ulta's own category. Third, the brand-launch news that fills the press feed did not show up in any of the answers sampled.
This is one run of live answers, and results vary between runs. It covers benchmark questions on a mix of corporate, service and category topics. Repeating the same benchmark questions would show whether the service-heavy, product-light pattern holds.
