Image of PM Modi with tonsured head and clean shave after his mother’s death on 30 December 2022

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim is that an image showing Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a tonsured head and clean-shaven face depicts him after his mother, Heeraben Modi, died on 30 December 2022. The review says the image was being shared as evidence that he had shaved his head in observance of Hindu customs. It examined both Modi’s appearance in footage and photographs from after the death and the history of the viral image. The review reports that it searched for recent visuals and found a live-streamed video on Modi’s official YouTube channel. In that video, he addressed the 108th Indian Science Congress by video conference on 3 January 2023, and the review says he appeared with his regular beard and hair. It also points to other public-meeting footage and photographs after 30 December, including a post about his meeting with Air Marshal PV Iyer on 31 December; these likewise did not show him with a shaved head and beard. The image’s earlier circulation further undermines the claim that it shows a change following the death. The review says the same image had circulated as a meme since at least January 2021, and that the original photograph was taken during the Parliament winter session in December 2017. On the evidence described, the image does not establish that Modi shaved his head after his mother’s death; the review identifies it as morphed.
