The claim concerned a circulating message and YouTube video presenting toe-raising as an especially simple way to prevent stroke and dementia and lower blood sugar. The Taiwan FactCheck Center says the video was posted on July 12, 2016, and reports consulting neurologist Chih-Bang Chu of National Taiwan University Hospital and Han-Hua Hu, founding chair of the Taiwan Stroke Society, about the health claims. Chu told the Center that exercise can help prevent high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and high cholesterol, but its benefits depend on reaching sufficient intensity. He described moderate exercise as sustained activity that leaves a person able to talk but not sing, with somewhat faster breathing and heartbeat, some sweating, and a recommended duration and frequency. Chu said ordinary toe-raising or flexing is unlikely to reach that intensity, so its disease-prevention effect may be less than the video suggests. Hu’s account placed toe-raising among many possible exercises and physical activity among many ways to improve health; he objected to presenting it as the world’s simplest preventive method. Chu also challenged the video’s reasoning that stimulating the feet or brain directly prevents vascular disease: different brain areas control different functions, and preserved control of the feet does not establish that other functions are healthy. The review concludes that toe-raising is beneficial exercise, but the claim that it itself prevents these diseases is overstated. It also distinguishes vascular risks from neurodegeneration, noting that the review’s consulted physician said Alzheimer’s disease involves abnormal protein accumulation and that reduced brain blood flow can be a result, rather than a cause, of degeneration.
