Moderna vaccine was found to be 100% effective against COVID-19.
Publisher’s rating: False

The Facebook post alleged that German authorities or media were concealing a death during a Brazilian vaccine study, suggesting that disclosure might reduce willingness to be vaccinated. The review identifies the event behind the post as the death of a participant in a clinical trial of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine in Brazil. It reports that Brazil’s health-surveillance authority, Anvisa, confirmed the death to dpa on October 21, local time. The central question was whether the incident had been kept out of German media. The review reports that it had not: besides dpa, Reuters and AFP covered the event, as did German outlets including Tagesschau and the Süddeutsche Zeitung. Those examples directly address the post’s claim of concealment; the evidence presented is that the death received coverage across multiple German news organizations, not that it was hidden. The post also leaves out an important qualification about the death. The review says CNN Brasil reported that the 28-year-old man from Rio de Janeiro died from COVID-19, not vaccine complications. It also notes that O Globo reported he was a doctor and a volunteer, while the available account did not establish whether he had received the vaccine or a placebo. The review further says the study coordinator recommended continuing the trials.
The claim concerns a flyer circulated on Facebook that warned masks lower blood oxygen and raise carbon dioxide, allegedly harming children’s brain development and killing nerve cells. The review identifies the flyer as work by the group “Ärzte für Aufklärung” and examines both its physiological claims and the research it invokes. It reports that the German Association of Paediatricians and Adolescents (BVKJ) rejected the asserted health danger. Its president, Thomas Fischbach, said surgical and everyday masks do not restrict oxygen supply or cause dangerous carbon-dioxide accumulation; the review also notes that the association considered masks an option for children from age six, with the ability to remove them on request. The review describes a medical-association statement as acknowledging small changes when masks are worn: depending on mask quality, breathing resistance and effort may rise slightly, oxygen saturation may fall a little, and blood carbon dioxide may increase slightly. It says these changes remain within normal ranges. The article explains the reasoning against the flyer’s rebreathing argument: a wearer breathes much more air per breath than the less-than-50-millilitre volume under an everyday mask, and air also enters through the fabric and sides. It therefore concludes that the flyer’s asserted oxygen deprivation does not follow from the measurements it cites. The flyer also relied on a University of Bamberg study about difficulty reading emotions from masked faces. The review says the study’s author confirmed that summary of the findings, but rejected using it as proof of long-term physical or psychological harm to children. The study tested adults, not children, and could not establish long-term effects. On mask requirements, the review points to scientific evidence and a CDC meta-study, which it says found masks can protect others and offer some protection to the wearer, particularly alongside distancing, hand hygiene and ventilation.

The review distinguishes what the Wuhan study observed from the broader conclusion drawn in the Facebook post. It reports that researchers screened more than nine million people without a previously identified COVID-19 history during the second half of May. They found a small number of people who tested positive without symptoms, no newly confirmed symptomatic cases, and no secondary cases among the positive people’s close contacts. The review also notes that the study found no viable virus in cultured samples from those positive cases. These observations describe that study’s participants and do not establish that all people without symptoms are non-infectious. The review gives reasons the study’s positive PCR results may not represent a group of confirmed, persistently asymptomatic infections. It describes false-positive PCR results as one possibility, noting that the study used a second analysis that included viral cultures; it also reports that the median cycle-threshold value was between 34 and 35, indicating low viral loads in those tested. The review cautions that some people who have no symptoms when tested may be pre-symptomatic and develop COVID-19 symptoms in the following days, when they may already be highly contagious. Others may be at the end of an illness. The review therefore rejects generalizing the study’s finding about its cases and their contacts to all asymptomatic people. It also cites a doctor’s account of finding people with no symptoms but high viral loads during hospital-floor screening. Its conclusion is that asymptomatic cases can differ: some may have low viral loads, while others may be highly contagious. The study’s observations about a particular set of cases do not support the Facebook post’s universal implication.

The claim concerns a video from a protest in Valencia, Spain, on 28 November 2020. It was circulated as evidence that “the police” had demonstrated against coronavirus restrictions. The review identifies the event as a call by Policías por la Libertad, a movement whose name refers to police officers, but says the group “has nothing to do with a state authority.” Its headline could give the impression that the police as an institution demonstrated; the investigation distinguishes that implication from what the video and available information establish. The review places the demonstration in context by describing the group’s stated aim: bringing together members of state security forces and private security to protest restrictions. It also reports that the movement did not disclose how many serving officers belonged to it. As a comparison, it cites El País’s account of a Madrid demonstration, which said no more than ten officers marched alongside other participants. That account concerns a different protest, so it does not establish the composition of the Valencia crowd; rather, it illustrates why the group’s name alone cannot show who was present. The review identifies the Valencia footage’s location as the square outside the city hall, Plaça de l'Ajuntament, and says the rally visible at the end of the clip had a relatively small turnout. It reports that activist Henna Maria, not a police officer, recorded and livestreamed the scenes on Facebook on the same day. These details identify the footage and its provenance, but the review does not provide a count or establish whether serving officers were among those shown. Its evidence therefore supports a narrower conclusion than the viral framing: the video shows a protest associated with a self-described movement, not proof that the police as an institution demonstrated.

The claim circulated alongside a graph comparing people identified as Japanese with a residual group described online as people of unknown nationality. The review says the graph itself did not label that residual group “foreigners”; the claim that most infections were among foreigners was an interpretation attached to it. It traced a similar graph to Twitter around July 2020 and noted that a version circulating by December had added information through November. The graph gave no source, but its figures appeared to draw on the health ministry’s domestic infection data. The review explains why the graph’s categories do not establish that the residual group was foreign. The ministry reported counts for people whose Japanese or foreign nationality had been confirmed, but did not publish a count of “unknown-nationality” cases. The graph’s residual may have been calculated by subtracting the confirmed Japanese and foreign-nationality counts from the total. Ministry officials told BuzzFeed that the confirmed-Japanese count included only cases where nationality was clearly established; it excluded cases still under confirmation and cases from municipalities that did not disclose individual nationalities. Officials therefore cautioned that the residual was not necessarily foreign. The ministry figures cited in the review showed 26,505 people confirmed as Japanese nationals and 1,522 confirmed as foreign nationals as of December 2. A ministry official said that, given the infection situation, many people in the residual group could be inferred to be Japanese. The review also addressed a separate statistic invoked in posts: Gunma Governor Ichita Yamamoto had said that foreign nationals accounted for 80% of infections in the prefecture during a particular week. The review says this was not a statement about 80% of Gunma’s cumulative cases, and that most of those foreign-nationality cases involved foreign residents or workers in the prefecture. Thus neither the graph’s unverified residual category nor the limited Gunma statistic supports the broad claim about infections overall.
