The claim concerned a photograph of a document presented on Facebook as evidence that “there was already coronavirus in the GDR in 1985.” The document does refer to a coronavirus infection, but the review explains that the post left out the context needed to identify what kind of outbreak it described. The document was written by the Potsdam district authority’s veterinary medicine department, not presented as a record of human illness. The document itself refers to a suspected introduction via vehicles associated with a “TKVB.” The review explains that this abbreviation was used in the GDR for animal carcass disposal facilities, and concludes that the record concerns an outbreak among animals. It reports that Stasi records documented cases among pigs in Halle and Potsdam in 1985; a spokesperson for the Stasi Records Archive likewise described the outbreak as restricted to pigs. Thus, the document supports the narrower point that coronavirus infections were recorded among pigs in the GDR in 1985. It does not establish that the human disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 existed there then. The review also notes that coronaviruses had been known in animals for decades, including outbreaks affecting domestic pigs in West Germany in the 1980s and in Saxony-Anhalt after 1968.

The claim arose from a Facebook post alleging that the WHO was trying to discredit ivermectin. The post referred to a Belga news dispatch about the WHO’s advice on using the drug against COVID-19. The review examines that allegation and the basis for the WHO’s recommendation, rather than whether ivermectin should be used for other conditions. The review reports that on 31 March 2021 the WHO said the available data on ivermectin for treating COVID-19 were inconclusive and recommended using it only in clinical trials until more data were available. It says this advice drew on an assessment by independent scientific experts who examined 16 randomized controlled trials involving 2,407 participants, including hospitalized and outpatient patients. The review reports that the experts judged the evidence on outcomes such as mortality, mechanical ventilation, hospitalization and clinical improvement to have very low certainty, citing small trials and methodological limitations. The review also reports that Merck, which produces ivermectin, had said on 4 February 2021 that it had found no significant evidence of clinical activity or efficacy in COVID-19 patients and identified a lack of safety data in most studies. Taken together, the review’s cited evidence describes a recommendation tied to uncertainty in the clinical evidence and the need for further trials; it does not establish the post’s allegation that the WHO’s purpose was to discredit the drug.

The claim arose from footage of Mariah Carey receiving a COVID-19 vaccine. A Belgian social-media post suggested she had not actually been vaccinated because the needle seemed to disappear when the syringe was removed. The dpa review examined the video of Carey’s vaccination that she had posted on social media and focused on the syringe’s visible features and the sequence of the injection. The review describes a retractable syringe, not a trick or an absent injection. At 0:46, it says, the footage shows a rounded blue part at the end of the plunger, which the review identifies as specific to retractable syringes. It also notes that, before the injection, the healthcare workers explain that pressing the blue button will retract the needle. The video’s timing provides the key context for the apparent disappearance: the review says the syringe enters Carey’s muscle at 0:51, the dose is fully injected at 0:57, and the nurse then presses the blue end to retract the needle at 0:59. Thus, the needle’s withdrawal follows the injection and is consistent with the syringe’s described mechanism—not evidence that no injection occurred.

A 1956 Public Service Announcement (PSA) predicting the COVID-19 Pandemic in 2020
Publisher’s rating: FALSE
The post presented a video as a 1956 public-service announcement that foresaw a future plague originating in Asia—identified in the claim as the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. FACTLY investigated the video’s origin and examined whether its footage was genuinely a decades-old announcement or a recent production made from older material. The review reports that a reverse-image search of screenshots led to an extended version on the YouTube channel “Ramses the Pigeon,” published on 1 March 2020 under the title “1950’s PSA: ‘Avoiding the Future Plague’.” Its description said the footage came from archival and public-domain material acquired from Archive.org, and linked the upload to the creator’s wish to post a video on February 29. The review identifies Max Patrick Schlienger, who uses the name Ramses the Pigeon, as the creator and says he made the video in February 2020. The investigation also describes the video as a satirical mash-up, rather than an authentic 1956 announcement. It reports that Schlienger characterized it in a Reddit post as satire intended to lampoon anti-science perspectives about COVID-19. FACTLY further traced some scenes to older films: a household robot scene to the 1940 film *Leave It to Roll-oh*, and other scenes to *Tornado* (1956). Thus, the use of old film footage—including material from a 1956 film—does not establish that the video itself was made in 1956 or predicted the pandemic.
