Claim: BJP secured minimum votes in 36 constituencies of Delhi

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The viral post claimed that BJP lost by fewer than 2,000 votes in 36 Delhi constituencies. Fact Crescendo’s Tamil-language review examined the Delhi Assembly election results and checked that assertion against the Election Commission’s published constituency results. It also assessed two accompanying claims: that BJP had not announced welfare measures and that it received 40% of the vote. The review says the post had been shared on Facebook on February 12, 2020. (S1: “இந்த பதிவை, இந்தியாவே என் சுவாசம் என்ற ஃபேஸ்புக் பக்கம் 2020 பிப்ரவரி 12ம் தேதி வெளியிட்டுள்ளது.”) For the seat-by-seat check, the review says it examined the Election Commission’s results, which covered all 70 constituencies across seven pages. It found only three constituencies where the winning margin was below 2,000 votes: Aadarsh Nagar and Bijwasan, where AAP defeated BJP by 1,589 and 753 votes, respectively, and Laxmi Nagar, where BJP defeated AAP by 880 votes. Thus, only two of the three close contests were BJP losses—not 36. The review also reports that BJP had announced welfare measures in its manifesto, contrary to the post’s assertion that it had not. Separately, it checked the vote-share claim against the Election Commission page and reported BJP’s share as 38.5%, not 40%. These additional checks address other claims in the same post; the constituency results directly disprove its claim about 36 close BJP losses.

99% of the Muslim voters and 68% of the Hindu voters have voted in the 2020 Delhi Elections.

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim concerns the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections and says that 99% of Muslim voters and 68% of Hindu voters voted. FACTLY checked whether the Election Commission of India (ECI) published turnout figures broken down by religion, and reports that it did not. The figures therefore cannot be substantiated from the ECI’s published turnout data described in the review. [S1: “The Election Commission of India does not provide information regarding voter turnout on the basis of religion.”] [S1: “The voter turnout is provided only for the constituency, district, and total. ECI does not release voter turnout data on the basis of religion.”] The review gives overall context for the election: Delhi had 1,46,92,136 voters and a reported turnout of 62.59%, or around 92 lakh people. It notes that some Muslim-majority constituencies had higher turnout, but explains that constituency-level results do not establish the voting rate of Muslim voters across Delhi. [S1: “The total number of voters in NCT of Delhi are 1,46,92,136. Delhi witnessed 62.59% voter turnout, so the number of voters who voted on the poll day was around 92 lakhs.”] [S1: “Some of the Muslim majority constituencies have recorded higher voter turnouts in the Delhi Elections. It does not mean that 99% of all Muslim voters have cast their votes.”] The review also distinguishes turnout from exit-poll findings about party preference. It says some exit polls suggested that Muslim voters might support AAP or Congress, but these estimates concern whom respondents might vote for—not how many Muslim voters actually turned out. The review reports that the post supplied no data establishing the asserted religious turnout percentages. [S1: “There are some exit polls that suggested that the majority of Muslims might vote for AAP (69% Muslim voters) and Congress (15% Muslim voters). But, they do not claim that 99% of the Muslim voters have come out on the Election day to vote.”] [S1: “There is no data to suggest that 99% of Muslim voters voted.”]

In Delhi Assembly Elections 2020, BJP lost 27 seats by a margin of less than 1000 votes.

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim concerns the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections and says the BJP lost 27 seats by fewer than 1,000 votes. FACTLY checked the winning margins reported on the Election Commission of India’s website. Its analysis found only two constituencies where the winner’s margin was below 1,000 votes: Bijwasan, won by AAP, and Laxmi Nagar, won by BJP. That leaves only one such seat in which the BJP’s candidate lost—not 27. The review also says no constituency was decided by fewer than 100 votes. Its wider breakdown reports margins greater than 10,000 in 55 of the 70 seats, between 5,000 and 10,000 in six, and between 1,000 and 5,000 in seven; only two were below 1,000. Those figures account for all 70 seats and support the review’s conclusion that the post greatly overstated the number of close BJP losses.

People shout out slogans against Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and CAA after AAP victory in Delhi elections 2020.

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim attached the video to the period after AAP won the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, and described its young demonstrators as shouting slogans against Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. FACTLY’s investigation focused on whether the video existed before the election results, rather than treating the post’s timing description as established.
