Claim: P Chidambaram told RBI to print double serial number currency
Publisher’s rating: Fact Crescendo Rating: False
The review investigates a social-media post linking P. Chidambaram to “double number” banknotes and attributing a claim about them to former Reserve Bank of India governor Raghuram Rajan. The post alleged that notes worth about six lakh crore had been printed and also raised a separate insinuation about counterfeit currency printed in Pakistan. The review says the post offered no evidence for its accusation about double-number notes. To check the attribution, the review searched for whether Rajan had accused the Congress government of printing six lakh crore in double-serial-number notes. It reports finding no such news or statement. It also examined an article alleging that counterfeit notes with duplicate serial numbers had been printed during Congress rule. According to the review, that article did not attribute an accusation to Rajan or support the six-lakh-crore figure; its account instead alleged that the RBI had printed counterfeit notes, a distinct claim. The review further compared the social-media allegation with reporting about a numerical discrepancy in RBI banknote figures. It describes a Times of India report based on information obtained under the Right to Information Act: the figures concerned 1,000-rupee notes, including an apparent difference of 9.7 million notes valued at 970 crore rupees. The RBI’s explanation, as quoted in the review, was that such a difference could occur when printing crores of notes. The review says this issue did not establish that duplicate serial-number notes were printed. It concludes that it found no report that Rajan accused Chidambaram, or that Chidambaram instructed the printing of such notes.

La venta de coches ha caído un 30% [en términos interanuales] y un 9% a lo largo del año
Publisher’s rating: Verdad a medias
The claim concerns figures cited by PP secretary general Teodoro García Egea during a parliamentary question to the government. The review says the 30% comparison was between August 2019 and August 2018; it describes the 9% figure as a comparison of the first seven months of 2019 with the same period in 2018. The figures were therefore supported, but the review says they did not by themselves show a reliable year-on-year trend. The key qualification is that August 2018 was an unusually strong month for registrations. The review explains that a new European vehicle-testing standard, WLTP, took effect in September 2018. In advance, manufacturers offered discounts to move vehicles certified under the old standard, producing an unusual rise in registrations the month before. The DGT described that increase in demand as “historic.” To assess the comparison, the review says it used monthly registration figures from the Spanish Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers (Afnac), which it says compiles the figures and sends them to the DGT. It also compared August sales with the longer historical pattern: August was the lowest-sales month each year from 2000 onward, according to the review, while August 2019 was in line with August 2017 and the highest since 2008 when the exceptional 2018 figure is excluded. Its conclusion is that the declines were numerically correct, but comparison with the distorted 2018 baseline needed context.

India’s annual GDP growth rate went lower than Pakistan’s annual GDP growth rate for the first time in the last 70 years.
Publisher’s rating: FALSE
FACTLY examined the claim that India’s annual GDP growth rate had fallen below Pakistan’s for the first time in 70 years. The review says the claim compared India under Modi with Pakistan and traced its data to annual growth rates from 1961 through 2018 on the World Bank website. It reports that Pakistan’s annual growth rate had exceeded India’s on multiple occasions before the period in question. (S1: “Under Modi, India’s annual GDP growth rate went lower than Pakistan’s annual GDP growth rate for the first time in the last 70 years.”; “The data regarding the annual GDP growth rates of India and Pakistan (for the years 1961 – 2018) can be found on the World Bank website.”) The review describes its method as comparing the available annual data, and says Pakistan’s growth rate surpassed India’s in some years in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. It identifies 2000 as the last year in which Pakistan surpassed India. Those earlier instances directly contradict the “first time in the last 70 years” part of the claim. (S1: “On comparison of the available data, it can be found that Pakistan’s annual GDP growth rate has surpassed India’s annual GDP growth rate multiple times in the past.”; “In the graph below, it can be seen that Pakistan’s growth rate surpassed India for some years in the 60s, 70s, 80s and also, in 90s. The last time Pakistan surpassed India was in 2000.”) FACTLY also flags a mismatch in the comparison circulating with the claim: India’s 5% growth figure was for the first quarter of fiscal year 2019–20, whereas the cited Pakistan figure was an annual rate for fiscal year 2018–19. The review reports Pakistan’s figure for that fiscal year as 3.3% and says it could not find a Pakistan figure for the matching Indian quarter. That qualification concerns the figures used in the post; the historical annual comparisons are the review’s separate basis for rejecting the claim of a first occurrence. (S1: “The Q1 (Quarter-1) 2019-20 GDP growth rate of India (5%) is being compared with some random number because the annual GDP growth rate of Pakistan in the last financial year (2018-19) was just 3.3% and the Q1 2019-20 growth rate of Pakistan was not found.”)

Newtral investigated an image attributing to Pablo Iglesias the statement that people earning the minimum wage do so because their work is minimal and they do not deserve more. The review says the wording circulates repeatedly under the names of both Iglesias and Pablo Casado, and reports that Iglesias never made the statement. Its conclusion therefore addresses the specific attribution in the viral image, not whether people deserve their wages or what the minimum wage should be. To check the attribution, Newtral says it searched interviews and public statements, as well as Iglesias’s Twitter and Facebook accounts, and found no instance of him saying those words. The excerpt does not identify a particular original post or image creator, so it does not establish where the image first appeared; it does report that the quote has been attributed to both politicians and belongs to neither. The review also gives context that cuts against the image’s portrayal of Iglesias: it describes him as a supporter of raising the minimum wage. It says the increase to 900 euros had been approved by the Spanish government in the preceding December and resulted from a budget agreement between the PSOE and Unidas Podemos. It also notes that Unidas Podemos’s program for the 28 April election proposed a minimum wage of 1,200 euros in the next legislature. These details provide context for the attribution, while the review’s reported search is the direct evidence about whether he said the quote.
