A crowd of people buying Dior perfume in Chip Mong Noro Mall

Publisher’s rating: Misleading

The claim concerned a crowd photo said to show shoppers waiting for more than five hours to buy Dior perfume at Chip Mong Noro Mall in Phnom Penh. The review says the post appeared on Facebook on September 21, 2023, and that the accompanying text attributed the queue to the perfume purchase. Fact Crescendo Cambodia’s investigation found that the image did not depict that mall or a Dior shop. To check the image, the publisher says it used Google Reverse Image Search. It reports finding a photo with the same shape on the Global Times website, in a January 11, 2021 report about Chinese supermarkets. The review also compared the social-media image with the original image and located the same view on Getty Images. Getty identified the scene as a queue outside the Louis Vuitton store at the International Finance Centre in Shanghai, photographed on December 31, 2020—not a Dior queue in Phnom Penh. The review’s conclusion is that the image was misrepresented: it showed a Louis Vuitton queue in Shanghai in 2021, rather than people buying Dior perfume at Chip Mong Noro Mall. The supplied excerpt does not provide details about how the image was edited, or independently describe the length of the Shanghai queue.

Latest recruitment notification of RRB for 18,023 Assistant Loco Pilot positions and 11,029 positions in various technician roles

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim concerns a purported Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) notification announcing 18,023 Assistant Loco Pilot vacancies and 11,029 vacancies in technician roles. FACTLY examined the notification shared on social media and checked whether the RRB had issued it. Its review reports that it found no such notice on the Indian Railways recruitment page, and that the purported advertisement itself contained a date that undermined its authenticity. The document said the advertisement had been published in an Employment News edition on 13 October 2024. FACTLY noted this was a year in the future relative to the review’s reporting, and treated that detail as further evidence that the circulating notification was fake. It also reported that several educational institutes had labelled the notice fraudulent, though the excerpt does not identify those institutes or provide their statements. FACTLY further says it contacted PIB Fact-Check for clarification. The review reports that PIB later clarified in a tweet that the advertisement about Indian Railways vacancies was fake. Taken together, the reported absence of the notice from the recruitment page, the future publication date stated on the document, and PIB’s reported clarification support the conclusion that this was not a genuine RRB recruitment notification. The review does not provide the tweet’s text or a link to it in the supplied excerpt.

The claim concerns Facebook posts offering a year of unlimited travel on SNCB trains for two euros. The review says versions of this offer had been shared since late September 2023, including posts presenting it as a 70th-anniversary promotion or a social program for Belgian residents. The posts instructed users to click an application button to obtain the pass. The review checked whether the offer appeared in SNCB’s official communications. It reports that the company’s website did not mention such a promotion and instead displayed a warning, dated October 5, 2023, about fraudulent messages claiming to promote an SNCB offer. An SNCB spokesperson also told dpa that the company had issued warnings about such fraud attempts and advised travelers to use only its official channels. The review also examined the Facebook pages circulating the offer. It describes two pages that appeared to have been created to distribute versions of the promotion, with few followers and likes. A Facebook search readily located SNCB’s official page, which had about 76,000 followers and 71,000 likes; the review reports that the offer did not appear there. It further notes that SNCB was created in 1926, contradicting the posts’ claim that it was celebrating 70 years. The review’s evidence therefore identifies the two-euro pass as an impersonation-based fraud, not an official SNCB offer.

Publisher’s rating: Weitgehend richtig.
