Publisher’s rating: FALSE
The post called the man who spoke to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa during his visit to Lankagama an “unofficial government actor,” claiming he was 69-year-old Ikiriwewa resident Sunadasa, came at the request of someone working near the president, and had acted in films. The review places the exchange in the dispute over road improvements linking Lankagama, near the Sinharaja Forest Reserve, to Deniyaya. It says environmentalists opposed the project and that the president visited to inspect it. The post’s implication was that the speaker was an outsider brought in to act rather than a local resident. To check the claim, the publisher says it examined television coverage of the visit, including a detailed Derana evening-news report dated August 29, 2020, contacted the man shown speaking, and asked Lankagama resident Sunil Widanagamage about the people in a photograph. The man identified himself as W. D. Sumith Chaminda, aged 48, and said his ancestors had lived in Lankagama. The review also reports that he worked at a government office in Neluwa and had taken a leading role in residents’ efforts to obtain a road, in part because of the difficult daily journey to work. The review says Widanagamage likewise identified the man in the photograph as Sumith Chaminda, and identified the person beside him as a Lankagama resident. It further reports that the unmasked man pictured in social-media posts as the supposed actor was a different person from the masked speaker. The review found that the image of the supposed actor had appeared in Sri Lanka-related reports from 2017, where the person was described as a hill-country vegetable seller photographed by an Australian tourist. On the evidence it describes, the post misidentified both the speaker and his connection to Lankagama.
Claim: New Zeeland people eating food in Indian tradition
Publisher’s rating: False
The claim concerned a photograph of people seated in rows and eating in a hall, shared with a caption saying it showed people in New Zealand following Indian culture. Fact Crescendo says the post was shared on Facebook by Annapoorani Naganathan on August 26, 2020. The review compared the image with a separate rumor about New Zealand’s prime minister visiting a Hindu temple, but noted differences in the pictured settings: the temple in that rumor had carpet, while the image under review showed tiled flooring. The servers also appeared to be Indian, and the diners included both foreigners and Indians. The review describes reverse-image searching the photograph and finding other fact-check articles about it, but says its own searches did not uncover evidence establishing the photograph’s origin. It then found similar images on TripAdvisor for an Ayurvedic centre at the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Dhanwantari Ashram near Neyyar Dam in Kerala. The review cites matching visual details, including a yellow pillar, a large window, people wearing yellow T-shirts, a wall-mounted speaker, and deity pictures beside the entrance. These similarities suggested the photograph might have been taken there, but the review says it could not find the image itself on the ashram’s website. Thus, the review did not establish the photograph’s original location. It reported that the image was not taken in New Zealand, while identifying the Kerala ashram only as a possible location. Its conclusion was that the Facebook post’s New Zealand attribution was false—not that the original photograph’s provenance had been definitively found.
The claim attributes the lines beginning “Noch sitzt ihr da oben” to Theodor Körner, a German poet born in 1791. The review investigated whether the wording appears in Körner’s literary works and where the lines came from. It reports that a keyword search of Körner’s works available on zeno.org found no match. Literature scholar Erhard Jöst told the agency that Körner “never wrote this” and that the verses appear in none of his poems, dramas, or prose. The review traces the wording to “Anklage,” a poem by Renate Schütte. The agency says it located the poem in the Berlin Center for Research on Antisemitism’s library; Schütte’s collected poetry was published in a third edition in 1984 under the title “Der Wind schlägt um.” The poem’s final four lines read, in the review’s account, “Heut sitzt ihr noch oben” and end with “Dann richtet das Vok (sic!), und dann gnade euch Gott!” The viral version is therefore a lightly altered version of Schütte’s stanza, not a verified quotation from Körner. The review also describes earlier appearances of similar wording. A 1991 documentary shows a man reciting similar lines at a Holocaust-denial event in Munich in 1990. The agency contacted him; according to the review, he said the lines came from Schütte, not Körner. This supports the review’s account of the quotation’s provenance, while the search of Körner’s works and Jöst’s assessment address the specific attribution.
Original picture of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at the London museum
Publisher’s rating: FALSE
The post claimed that a particular image showed the original picture of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at the London museum. The review distinguishes the existence of a Shivaji portrait in the museum from the identity of the image circulating online: it reports that the museum does have a painting, but that it is not the one shown in the post. The review also says a search of the British Museum website did not find the circulating image, while identifying a Shivaji painting in the museum’s “Portrait of Indian Princes” album. To investigate the image’s history, the review describes a reverse-image search that led to a Bharat Gyan blog article. That article described a similar painting as the only live sketch of Shivaji discovered by historian V. S. Bendrey. The review says its research found that Bendrey did not discover this particular painting, though he is credited with finding and publishing the paintings it identifies as the real image of Shivaji. The review places those paintings’ commission in 1664 AD, when Dutch Governor of Surat Von Valentyn commissioned portraits of Shivaji and other princes. It says Bendrey found the paintings during research in Europe and first published them in 1933. The key distinction is therefore between the image in the post and the painting the review identifies in the museum’s collection; the review does not claim that the museum has no Shivaji portrait.
The review concerns Macron’s public criticism of Georges Malbrunot after Le Figaro published an account of a conversation between Macron and a Hezbollah official during the French president’s visit to Beirut. The source says the report reproduced the exchange “almost word for word” and describes Macron as accusing Malbrunot of acting irresponsibly, unprofessionally and mesquinely. It distinguishes the substance of the reporting from the manner of the rebuke: the president addressed the journalist publicly in front of cameras and microphones, when he was not in a position to respond. The review characterizes that as potentially intimidating, while noting that Macron did not formally threaten him. To assess whether Malbrunot had breached a journalistic duty, the review says it looked for a deontological rule that would have barred publication. It notes that there is no law or regulation governing journalists’ ethics, but that several nonbinding charters exist. It cites the 2019 Global Charter of Ethics for Journalists’ requirement of honest collection and publication of information, and its provision that a journalist’s responsibility to the public takes priority over other responsibilities. The review argues that protecting French diplomatic or military interests is not, by itself, the journalist’s role, while recognizing limits where people could be endangered or public order harmed. The source identifies a different professional concern: the near-complete transcript appears to have come from a direct witness who disclosed a confidential exchange despite a duty of professional secrecy. It therefore says the president’s criticism was misdirected toward the reporter rather than the person who leaked the conversation. It nevertheless faults Malbrunot for not checking the source’s reliability and says he should have consulted the Élysée before publishing, given the sensitivity and nonpublic nature of the remarks. These are the review’s stated conclusions; the excerpt does not identify the leaker or independently establish who supplied the transcript.

Video of Rajdeep Sardesai being heckled after his latest interview with Rhea Chakraborty
Publisher’s rating: FALSE
The claim concerns a video said to show journalist Rajdeep Sardesai being heckled after his interview with Rhea Chakraborty. FACTLY identifies the footage as an earlier incident, not a reaction to that interview: it says the incident took place in 2014, during Narendra Modi’s first official visit to the United States after his election as prime minister. To check the video’s context, FACTLY reports searching for “Rajdeep heckled” and finding news articles and videos about the same incident. It points to a video placing the event outside Madison Square Garden in New York in September 2014. The review’s text contains a typo in the year (“2104”) in that passage, but elsewhere states 2014 and describes the event as years old. The review also says that, despite the video’s circulation after Sardesai’s interview, it found no news article or report of a mob heckling him after that interview. Its conclusion rests on the footage’s earlier identification and chronology: the video does not show the post-interview event asserted in the claim.

The social-media posts attributed to Mel Gibson alleged that Hollywood studios were financed with the blood of children and that consuming baby blood was so common it functioned as a currency. The review traces these claims to YourNewsWire.com and its successor, NewsPunch. Those sites alleged that Gibson made the remarks backstage after appearing on the BBC’s Graham Norton Show on 24 November 2017; the review notes that the articles have since been removed. The review found no independent confirmation of the alleged backstage statements. Gibson’s representative, Alan Nierob, said Gibson had never made them and that he had been near Gibson throughout his London stay. The review also reports that the original website’s operator, Sean Adl-Tabatabai, told DPA by email on 27 August 2020 that there was no evidence Gibson had made the quoted remarks and that the story was removed because its claims could not be adequately checked. The evidence therefore points to an unsubstantiated story from a single online source, not corroborated disclosures by Gibson. The review adds that the claim continued to circulate on social media, especially among QAnon supporters, even after the source sites removed it.

'Leven in 2022'.
The review examines a social-media post that presents Walter Molino’s illustration as titled “Leven in 2022” and associates it with people travelling in small, glass-bubble vehicles. It identifies the illustration as one published in the Italian Sunday newspaper Domenica del Corriere on 16 December 1962, and compares the image’s actual inscription with the wording circulating online. The review gives that inscription as “In città gireremo così,” which it translates as a question about how people might travel around the city. The review also describes what the illustration’s accompanying article discussed: the operation and construction of a small vehicle called the “Singoletta,” rising traffic, and the vehicle’s possible role in easing congestion. It says the article’s text does not mention the year 2022. Thus, the post’s “Leven in 2022” framing is not supported by the title or the article as described in the review; the source presents the work as a visualization of future urban mobility, rather than an illustration or article about life in 2022.
