The viral post alleged that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath watched a live video of the Hathras victim’s funeral. Vishvas News investigated the image accompanying that claim and reported that it had been edited: the original image showed the chief minister on a video call with the victim’s family, not watching the funeral. The review says the false claim circulated with an image of Adityanath seated in front of a laptop, presented as showing the funeral on its screen. To check the image’s provenance, the review says it searched established newspapers and found the original picture in Dainik Jagran’s Hathras edition. Its caption identified the scene as Adityanath speaking by video call with the victim’s family in Lucknow on a Wednesday. The review also located the original image on the Uttar Pradesh government’s information department and Chief Minister’s Office social-media accounts. It reports that the Chief Minister’s Office account posted the image on September 30, 2020, at 7:24 p.m., describing a video-call discussion with the family. The review further reports that media adviser Rittanjay Kumar confirmed that the authentic picture had been shared from the adviser’s account and that the viral version was edited. Together, the original-image provenance, its caption and the reported confirmation support the review’s conclusion: the image did not show Adityanath watching the funeral live. The article says the same picture had been altered and recirculated with a false description.
