Video of people from UP attacking the men accused of attacking & shaving off the beard of an elderly man in Ghaziabad
Publisher’s rating: FALSE
The claim concerns a video said to show people from Uttar Pradesh attacking men accused of assaulting and shaving the beard of an elderly man in Ghaziabad. FACTLY’s review identifies the footage as a different incident: a mob beating three men in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri area. It says those men allegedly entered a vegetable seller’s home to extort money, and concludes that the video has no connection to the Ghaziabad incident. [S1]

Photo of Assam’s Congress leader Amjad Ali who was caught with ammunition
Publisher’s rating: FALSE
The post paired a photograph of a handcuffed man with an image of bullets and grenades, claiming they showed Assam Congress leader Amjad Ali caught with ammunition. FACTLY examined both images and found that neither depicted an event in Assam: the man and the ammunition had separate origins unrelated to the claim. For the handcuffed man, the review reports that reverse image searches found blogs sharing the same photograph in 2018. Those blogs identified him as Mubarak Hossain, a madrasa teacher from Mymensingh, Bangladesh, arrested over alleged sexual harassment of a student who later died by suicide. The review also notes that a Bangladeshi newspaper had reported the incident. For the ammunition image, FACTLY says a reverse image search led to a 2018 post by Jammu and Kashmir Police. That post described ammunition recovered from militants after an exchange of fire near Srinagar on October 29, 2018. The review adds that it found no recent reports of Amjad Ali being arrested over ammunition and points to a visible mismatch between the blue uniform in the image and the khaki uniform it identifies as Assam Police’s. Together, the image histories and these checks do not support the post’s identification of the images as showing Amjad Ali or an Assam arrest.
FACT CHECK: කොස්ගමදී පැහැර ගැනීමට ලක් වූ දැරියක්ද?
Publisher’s rating: False
The review examined a widely shared post asking for help to find a six-year-old girl allegedly abducted at night. The post said the incident occurred on June 3, 2021, described four armed people taking the child, and directed readers to contact Suriyawawa police. The review noted a mismatch in the claim’s framing: the photo appeared to show a child who had become separated, while the post described an abduction. It also reported that major news outlets had not reported a recent missing girl in Kosgama. To investigate the image, the publisher says it conducted a reverse-image search. It identified the child as Avani Jain, an Indian girl who became separated from her family at Nagpur railway station in 2016, rather than a Sri Lankan child. The review says Avani was four at the time and that her family had travelled to the station to go from Nagpur to Bhopal. The photo showed her with a policewoman as railway police sought to alert her family. The review reports that Indian media said the image was shared in more than 200 WhatsApp groups and that Avani’s parents found her within 20 minutes. It also says the people who answered calls to the numbers in the viral post lived in Anuradhapura and Piliyandala, and said their numbers had been misused. The publisher’s conclusion is that the circulated post was misleading: the image came from a 2016 episode in India in which a child was separated from her family, not a kidnapping in Sri Lanka.

Nirav Modi made a statement in London Court about bribing BJP leaders with 1300 crores to abscond from India
Publisher’s rating: FALSE
The claim concerns an alleged statement by Nirav Modi in a London court: that he had paid BJP leaders 1300 crores to help him abscond from India. The review identifies this as a social-media post and directly examines whether Modi made that statement, rather than treating reports about his separate financial or extradition proceedings as evidence that he did. To check it, FACTLY says it searched news articles for a statement linking Modi’s departure from India to BJP leaders. It reports finding none. It also describes what the reporting it consulted did cover: Modi was in Wandsworth Prison; a UK court allowed his extradition on 25 February 2021; and he appealed, alleging he would not receive a fair trial in India. The review further notes that he had been arrested in central London in March 2019. These are details of his legal circumstances, not evidence of the alleged confession. The review’s conclusion rests on the absence of the alleged statement in the news articles it searched and cites. It does not present a court transcript or other primary record of the proceedings, so the excerpt supports the narrower account that the reviewed reporting contained no mention of the claimed statement. It also says FACTLY had previously debunked similar claims about Modi statements involving BJP or Congress leaders.
