Narendra Modi led BJP Government had passed a new amendment to award capital punishment to every rape convict
Publisher’s rating: MISLEADING
The post claimed that the Narendra Modi-led BJP government had passed a new amendment allowing capital punishment for every rape convict, and that President Ram Nath Kovind had approved it. FACTLY says it checked whether the government had recently issued an ordinance amending existing laws and reports finding no such ordinance on the Ministry of Law and Justice website. It distinguishes that alleged new measure from the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2018, which it says was passed in August 2018. The review explains that the 2018 Act amended several laws, including the Indian Penal Code, and allowed courts to award capital punishment in a specific category: cases involving rape of a girl under 12. It says President Kovind gave his consent to that law on 11 August 2018. The review therefore documents a limited provision in an earlier law, not a new amendment making death the punishment for every rape conviction. FACTLY also gives the legislative sequence: following the 2013 Delhi Nirbhaya incident, the UPA government passed the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2013; after the Kathua and Unnao incidents in 2018, the Modi-led government introduced an ordinance and later passed the 2018 Act in Parliament. For other rape cases, the review says the 2018 Act provides a maximum punishment of life imprisonment and that courts decide the punishment based on the circumstances of each case.
Publisher’s rating: Het bericht is nep.
The claim concerns a screenshot said to show Het Laatste Nieuws reporting that Jürgen Conings had been arrested by two soldiers, then taking the article offline ten minutes later. The fact-check reports that HLN confirmed on 21 June that the article was not written by the newspaper or the journalists named beneath it, and that it had never appeared on HLN’s website. That directly contradicts the screenshot’s presentation as a briefly published HLN article. The review also identifies inconsistencies visible in the screenshot. Conings’s first name is misspelled twice: it lacks the umlaut in “Jürgen.” The “net binnen” banner shows five other headlines, all dated 22 May, including two about Conings. The review notes that this predates the screenshot’s first appearance online, which it dates to 23 May. These details provide additional reasons to doubt that the image is a genuine capture of an HLN webpage as claimed. The review says the rumour began with an unknown Twitter user on 23 May and spread again after Conings’s body was found on 20 June. It describes the screenshot as circulating widely on social media, but the excerpt does not provide independent technical analysis of the image or evidence about who created it. Its conclusion rests on HLN’s confirmation and the discrepancies noted in the screenshot.

Claim: 2013 dated Justice Chandru retirement news shared now
Publisher’s rating: Missing Context
Fact Crescendo investigated social-media posts about Justice Chandru’s retirement that readers could understand as describing a recent event. The posts suggested that he had retired around June 20 or 21, 2021, and returned home simply by train. The review says commenters also treated the story as recent, and that the posts cited Dinamalar as their source. The investigation therefore checked when Dinamalar had actually published the story. The review reports that Dinamalar published it on March 9, 2013, and that other outlets also reported the event at the time. It dates Chandru’s retirement from his position as a judge of the Madras High Court to March 8, 2013, and says he then returned home by a Chennai suburban train. On that account, the old report was being recirculated in a way that could make the event appear to have happened in 2021; the review does not present it as a new retirement.
Publisher’s rating: De afbeelding is getrukeerd.
The review investigated a Facebook image shared by a Dutch user that attributed the statement “Jürgen Conings pleegde zelfmoord. Hij schoot zich 3 x door het hoofd” to Belgian Justice Minister Vincent van Quickenborne. It says the image showed only the quote, without making clear where it came from. The review traces the text not to a ministerial statement but to a satirical contribution on the Flemish website ’tScheldt. To check the attribution, the review reports searching Google for the purported quote and finding ’tScheldt’s contribution. The site had published it on June 20, 2021, without further additions, and tweeted the quote that evening. The review also notes that ’tScheldt describes itself with the slogan “Vlaamse satire” and refers to Van Quickenborne satirically as the “minister van Achterstand en Justitie.” Together, those details identify the quote’s source and satirical framing; the Facebook image omitted that context. The review distinguishes the false attribution from what was known about Conings’s death. It reports that he was found dead in the Dilserbos on June 20, 2021, and that the Belgian public prosecutor said suicide by firearm was probable. However, the forensic doctor had not yet reached a conclusion by Monday afternoon, June 21. The excerpt therefore supports the conclusion that the quote was not actually made by the minister, but it does not establish the final finding about the cause of death.
