Kamlesh, a 19-year-old Indian Army man, sacrificed himself for the country on 09 November 2022

Publisher’s rating: MISLEADING

The claim concerned a social-media collage presenting Kamlesh as having died for India on 09 November 2022. FACTLY identified him as Indian Army soldier Kamlesh Kumar Singh and reported that he died on duty in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir, in September 2019—not on the date attached to the post. The review says it searched online using relevant keywords and found news reports that showed a picture of Kamlesh similar to the one in the viral post. Those reports identified him as a resident of Lakhanpura village in Bihar and placed his death in the shelling of Pakistan in Kupwara in September 2019. The review also says ETV Bharath reported that he joined the Army about 14 months before the incident and that Kupwara was his first posting. FACTLY further reports that Kamlesh was 19 when he died on duty. That age and his military service do not support the post’s implied timing: the review’s cited reporting places his death in 2019, roughly three years before the post’s claimed date. The review therefore concludes that the post misleads about when he died.

Publisher’s rating: 誤り

The video originated at a climate-protest performance in Vienna, Austria, filmed in February 2022, about two weeks before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The viral version cropped and enlarged part of that footage and replaced its original audio with reporting about the invasion.

The claim concerned a Facebook video presented as evidence that the United States had moved a B-2 Spirit stealth bomber to Poland “in recent days.” The dpa investigation examined the video itself and compared it with an earlier YouTube video showing a similar B-2 landing. The review reports matching details in the two clips, including the water and cloudy sky in the background and people filming. It also notes that a white car passes as a man raises his hands to take a photo or video, though it moves in the opposite direction in the two versions—an indication that one version had apparently been mirrored. To identify the location, the investigation compared the landscape in the second half of the Facebook video with Google Maps imagery. It says the visible green barbed-wire fence and light-colored buildings appear in archived imagery beside the water. The YouTube video also shows the end of a sign; the review says Google Maps imagery identifies it as a Ministry of Defence notice prohibiting unauthorized entry. Together, those comparisons place the scene at RAF Fairford, a British air base in Gloucestershire, England—not in Poland. The review further says an on-screen insert in the YouTube video dates it to 2020, and reports that media coverage of the landing and a press release from U.S. Strategic Command supported that timing. It also describes searches in German and English conducted in the days before the Facebook post that found no reports of a B-2 transfer to Poland. The footage therefore does not establish the claimed recent relocation: the investigation traced it to an earlier landing at a different location.

The review investigates photographs that the Russian Foreign Ministry posted on Twitter as evidence that Ukraine was making a so-called dirty bomb. It identifies the central image as bags containing white containers and checks whether that image supports the allegation. The review reports that the Slovenian government clarified the image’s origin the day after the Russian post: it showed smoke detectors containing radioactive sources, not evidence of Ukrainian bomb construction. The photograph came from Slovenia’s radioactive-waste agency, ARAO, and had also been used in a presentation dated May 2010. The review also checks the other images rather than treating the collage as a single piece of evidence. It says that the image labelled as scientific research reactors shows the Beloyarsk nuclear power plant in Russia, while another image shows a worker at a factory in Novosibirsk that manufactures parts for nuclear power plants. A separate image is identified as Ukraine’s Rivne nuclear power plant. The review says it could not definitively establish the origin of the image labelled as radioactive-waste storage. One detail supporting the identification of the central photograph is the wording visible on the bags. The review explains that “radioaktivno” is Slovenian for “radioactive,” whereas the Ukrainian word is different. Taken together, the image provenance and the identification of the other depicted sites show that the photos do not establish the allegation that Ukraine was building a dirty bomb. The review also notes that, following Russia’s accusations, Ukraine invited International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors.

Publisher’s rating: Falsch. Polen hat keine solchen Pläne. Die Geschichte stammt von einer Fake-News-Seite.

The allegation concerned a supposed Polish plan to take over parts of western Ukraine and hold a referendum on joining Poland. The investigation traced how that story spread online in late October 2022, beginning with a Polish website and passing through other outlets before Russian state news agency RIA Novosti reported it. The review says the claim was presented as reporting by a Belgian publication, Modern Diplomacy, but that appearance was misleading: the article itself linked to an earlier version published by International Affairs, which the review identifies as published by Russia’s foreign ministry. The review followed the links back to Dziennik Polityczny, a Polish site where the story had appeared on October 19. It describes that outlet as a disinformation site previously caught publishing falsehoods by Polish fact-checkers, and says the allegation was unsupported. The review also reports that no Polish government or presidential statement supported the alleged plan, and that Polish media had no report of it. These findings address the specific allegation rather than simply Poland’s general position on the war. As further relevant context, the review notes that President Andrzej Duda had said Poland recognized Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders, and distinguishes the allegation about Poland from Russia’s actual annexation of Ukrainian regions. The investigation’s conclusion rests on the traced publication chain, the lack of substantiation for the alleged plan, and the absence of supporting Polish official statements—not on evidence that Poland had made such a plan.

The review examined a social-media photo circulated with a caption describing a brave Burmese woman facing a military vehicle with a sword. It says the post appeared on February 15, 2021, and that the image also showed a group of women with alcohol. Those details match the image and claim at issue here. To investigate, Fact Crescendo Cambodia reports using Google Reverse Image Search. That search led to earlier images of the same format: a Twitter post showed three photos, including one of the armored vehicle, and the review also found a similarly shaped photo published by BBC News. The review describes these as images of military vehicles in Myanmar that do not show a woman confronting one. The review additionally says AFP checked the case on February 17, 2021, and found that the image of the woman had been digitally altered. Its conclusion is that the underlying photo shows an armored vehicle moving in Yangon, Myanmar, while the woman holding a sword is not present in the original image. Thus, the circulated image combines the vehicle scene with a woman who was added through editing.

The claim uses a photo to support the Russian allegation that Ukraine was preparing a “dirty bomb” for use against its own population. The review examined photos shared by Russia’s Foreign Ministry as evidence for that allegation. It found that the photo of plastic bags containing white tubes did not establish that Ukraine was making a bomb: it was a 2010 image from Slovenia, not evidence of Ukrainian bomb-making. The review says the Slovenian government confirmed the photo’s origin, and identifies the pictured items as smoke detectors used in presentations by Slovenia’s nuclear-waste management agency, ARAO.
