How the answers frame Waymo
This snapshot, taken on 2026-09-29, covers 250 benchmark questions put to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok, which is 1,250 answers in all. Waymo was named in 45 of them. By provider: Grok 21 of 250, Gemini 8, ChatGPT 6, Claude 6, Perplexity 4.
Where Waymo appeared, it was tied to innovation. Visibility by question intent was highest for innovation, at 21%, and 7% for leadership. It was 4% or lower on trust, safety and value, and 1% on reliability and service. It was 0% on employer, sustainability, avoid and driver pay. Few answers were credited to Waymo in a tagged way: one under Reliability & Operations and one marked Not Substantive.
Claude's answer to a question about who leads on self-driving technology gave Waymo the top slot. It described Waymo as the leader in fully driverless commercial operations and listed ride volumes, fleet size and planned city launches. It then moved on to Baidu, WeRide, Tesla and Zoox.
Grok's answer to a question about challengers to the top ride-hailing players opened with Uber, Lyft, Didi, Grab and Bolt as the incumbents. Waymo was among the brands named in that answer, but the stored text ends before it reaches autonomy, so this snapshot cannot show how Grok framed it there.
In the wider sector, Uber was named in 1,069 answers and Lyft in 636. Only Zoox (13) and Gopuff (16) were named less often than Waymo among the peers listed.
Waymo is the undisputed leader in fully driverless Level 4 commercial operations…
What the press is saying
PeakMetrics' news index shows 9,334 mentions of Waymo over the last 30 days, 2,102 of them with the brand in the headline. That is a heavy volume of coverage. Among the listed peers, only Uber (39,208), DoorDash (16,345) and Lyft (6,631, below Waymo) sit in the same range or higher, with Uber and DoorDash well above.
The recent headlines cover a mix of stories: a Hyundai supply arrangement for Waymo robotaxis, a Waymo car pulling itself over in California after detecting juvenile passengers with a gun, public rides opening in Denver, San Diego and Tampa, first responders in South Florida training for Waymo encounters, and service resuming in San Antonio after an April flooding pause.
The gap
The press covers Waymo as an operating business: city launches, supplier deals, local safety incidents, emergency-responder preparation and service interruptions. The AI answers in this snapshot mostly reduce that to a single frame, that of a technology leader in self-driving.
Waymo's news volume is more than Lyft's, yet Lyft was named in far more answers. The difference is the type of question. General ride-hailing questions in this snapshot drew on incumbents, and Waymo appeared when the question was about autonomy. Topics that fill the headlines, such as safety incidents and service reliability, registered at 4% and 1% visibility.
What to watch
For a comms team, the snapshot points to a narrow lane. Waymo's AI visibility is concentrated in innovation questions, while safety, trust and reliability questions rarely returned it. Those are the areas where the press is generating specific news.
Worth tracking in later runs: whether safety and reliability questions start to name Waymo, and which sources the answers cite when they do. Grok accounted for nearly half of all Waymo appearances, so a provider-by-provider view matters more than the combined figure. These are single-run answers that vary between runs, so treat them as a starting point and not as a ranking.
