How the answers frame TikTok
This snapshot, measured on 2026-09-29, put 250 benchmark questions that never named a brand to each of ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok. TikTok was named in 101 of the 1,250 answers. By provider that was Grok 29, ChatGPT 21, Gemini 21, Claude 15 and Perplexity 15, out of 250 each.
Visibility varied sharply by question intent. TikTok appeared in 23% of answers to "avoid" questions, 18% on privacy and data practices, and 15% on trust. It appeared in 0% of reliability answers and 1% of ecosystem compatibility answers. The brand shows up when the question is about caution.
The stored answers we reviewed follow that pattern. Claude's answer on declining tech trust cited survey figures on personal-data trust in TikTok. Gemini's answer on which social platforms Americans trust listed TikTok among the platforms consumers most often called least trustworthy. Grok's answer on employee burnout named ByteDance, described as TikTok's parent, as often ranking near the top for poor work-life balance. Its answer on opting out of targeted ads also named TikTok among the platforms covered.
The exception is ChatGPT's answer about ad account appeals. It described TikTok Ads Manager as the strongest appeals experience among the platforms it could verify, and it said it could not verify others such as Meta. Across all 101 appearances, the credited themes were thin: Not Substantive (3), Customer Experience (1) and Labour & Workplace (1).
TikTok is the tech company with the lowest level of trust — only 8% of respondents say they trust the company with their personal data, compared to 59.4% who distrust it.
What the press is saying
TikTok is heavily covered. The PeakMetrics news index shows 223,981 mentions in the last 30 days, 9,059 of them with the brand in the headline. Among the 15 sector peers in this data, only Google has more news volume.
The recent headlines center on child and teen safety and on legal settlements. Examples include Bloomberg on TikTok and YouTube facing pressure over child safety, and reports of a settlement with Alabama of at least $100 million. Another headline describes a first state settlement over teen safety claims. The rest is commercial and cultural: a TikTok Shop bundle launch and celebrity chatter.
TikTok Ads Manager currently looks like the best appeals experience…
The gap
In news volume TikTok sits near the top of its peer set. In these answers it sits seventh of 15, well behind Google (813 of 1,250), Apple, Microsoft, Amazon and Meta, though ahead of IBM, Salesforce and Adobe. Heavy press attention did not translate into broad presence in AI answers.
The themes differ too. The press headlines are about child safety and state settlements. In the stored answers we reviewed, the reasons TikTok came up were survey-based data-trust figures, work-life balance and ad controls. None of those answers referenced the settlements. The assistants cited survey and review-site material rather than the news cycle we see in the headlines.
This is one run of live answers, not a ranking or a trend. We reviewed 6 stored answers from the 101 that named TikTok, so the examples illustrate the pattern rather than measure it.
What to watch
For a TikTok comms team, the snapshot suggests that the questions where TikTok is most visible are the ones about avoidance, privacy and trust. Those are the questions where the answers lean on third-party survey figures.
The ad appeals answer shows that product-level help documentation can drive a favorable framing when the question is practical. That answer rested on the assistant's reading of official help pages, and it hedged on other platforms. Teams can check which pages assistants cite and whether they are current.
Reliability and innovation questions produced almost no TikTok visibility. That is a gap between where the brand is discussed in the press and where the assistants place it. Repeat the benchmark questions over time before reading anything into a single run.
