The claim combines two figures from material circulating online: that 108 athletes had died after sudden collapses since December 2020, and that deaths among FIFA footballers rose by 500% in 2021. The review traces the first figure to an article on the Israeli site Real Time News and an English-language Substack summary. It says the latter mainly repeated a Twitter thread by Yaffa Shir-Raz, who described herself as a health journalist and a co-author of the article. The reviewed article counted cases across all sports between December 2020 and November 2021, reporting 183 sudden cardiac incidents, 108 of them fatal. The review questions whether that count was reliably established: the article gave little explanation of how cases were found, and some links in its list of 108 did not report a death or the person’s vaccination status. It also notes that Christian Eriksen had not been vaccinated when he collapsed during the European Championship in June 2021; Alexaida Guedez’s vaccination status was unknown; and 12-year-old Jayson Kidd died after basketball practice from a pre-existing heart condition. The review says these examples had been checked previously and that, in the great majority of cases, no causal link to vaccination could be established. For the separate 500% figure, the review reports that Real Time News cited 21 FIFA players said to have died suddenly in 2021 and compared this with an average of 4.2 annual deaths attributed to cardiac incidents in a Wikipedia list of footballers who died during matches from 2001 to 2020. It characterizes both the list assembled by Real Time News and the calculation as doubtful. It also reports that a FIFA sudden-cardiac-death registry official told AFP he had observed no particular change compared with earlier years, while FIFA told Reuters it knew of no increase in cardiac incidents among its players.
