The claim concerns a video said to show Delhi’s Jama Masjid Imam Ahmad Bukhari joining the BJP in the presence of BJP leader Harsh Vardhan and others. FACTLY’s review identifies a different explanation for the scene: it says the footage is from an event near Gate 1 of Jama Masjid, not from a BJP-joining announcement. The review reports that Bukhari, former BJP Minority Morcha president Abdul Rashid and other BJP leaders attended the event, which Harsh Vardhan organised to lay the foundation stone for a toilet. To investigate, FACTLY says it searched online using relevant keywords and found a video with similar visuals that a Facebook user described as showing the toilet foundation-stone event. It reports that he described the event as the laying of a foundation stone for a toilet to be built using his MP funds, and that he named Bukhari and Abdul Rashid among those present. This supports the event explanation, rather than the claim that the footage records Bukhari joining the party. The review also says Harsh Vardhan posted another video showing Bukhari addressing people at the event, and that news websites reported Bukhari had condemned rumours that he was joining the BJP. Taken together, the review identifies the gathering as a public works event and distinguishes attendance from joining the party.
