Image of police personnel cleaning Mosques in Mamata Banerjee governed West Bengal

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim concerns an image shared as showing police personnel cleaning mosques in West Bengal, governed by Mamata Banerjee. FACTLY’s review identifies the scene instead as an earlier cleanup by Telangana police at Panjesha Mosque in Bhainsa, in Adilabad district. It places that activity within the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan programme conducted by Adilabad district police in 2016, and says the image has no connection to West Bengal. The review describes how it traced the image: a reverse image search found a similar photo in an AK News Facebook post dated 26 June 2016. That post identified the scene as police cleaning Panjesha Mosque in Bhainsa during Ramadan. The review also reports finding similar photos shared in June 2016 as images of Adilabad district police cleaning temples and mosques as part of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. As further corroboration, FACTLY says Telangana State Police posted on Facebook on 20 June 2016 about the Adilabad district police programme, describing tree planting and cleaning temples and mosques. It also refers to ETV Telangana videos reporting the programme, including footage of Nirmal police cleaning a temple. Taken together, the image’s identified location and its 2016 programme context contradict the claim that it depicts police cleaning a mosque in West Bengal.

Video of a Mosque calling for Jihad to combat the violence against Muslims in Tripura.

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim concerned a video circulating during communal violence in Tripura in 2021. It was presented as recent footage of a mosque calling for jihad to combat violence against Muslims there. FACTLY’s investigation says the video instead showed mosques in Idlib, Syria, calling for jihad against the Turkish army in February 2020; it concludes the footage was old and unrelated to Tripura. To trace the video, the review describes reverse-image searches of screenshots from it. Those searches led to a similar video posted on YouTube on 7 February 2020, identified there as footage of a mosque in Idlib. The review also found a similar video in a Yeniakit article dated 7 February 2020, whose title described a call from mosques for Syrians to go to jihad. The review further reports that journalist Hasan Sivri posted the same video on 7 February 2020. His accompanying description placed the calls in opposition-controlled mosques in Idlib and said they urged people to fight a Turkish army convoy advancing into Idlib. Taken together, the identified earlier postings and descriptions provide the review’s basis for distinguishing the video’s Syrian setting and 2020 context from the later claim about Tripura.
