Publisher’s rating: Falso

The claim is that Britain’s ambassador to the United Nations, Lord Caradon (Hugh Mackintosh Foot), said in 1967 that Britain would return Gibraltar when Spain restored Catalonia’s freedoms. Newtral reports that it found no such reference in the UN’s resolution from the December 1967 plenary session, in the documents it consulted, or in the 1967 annual report section on Gibraltar. The UN regional information centre told Newtral that transcripts of those sessions did not exist and directed it to the published documents and annual report. The review distinguishes the Catalonia allegation from contemporary reports that did mention betrayal. ABC correspondent José María Massip reported Caradon saying Britain would not betray Gibraltar’s inhabitants by leaving them “at the mercy of the Spaniards,” and that no UN agreement would divert Britain from its duties to Gibraltar’s people. Newtral says those remarks were also referenced in the British Parliament the following year, but that they contained nothing about Catalonia. The review also places the disputed exchange in the session’s actual context: the main issue between Britain, Spain, and Gibraltar was the referendum held in Gibraltar on 10 September 1967, not the alleged response about the Treaty of Utrecht. It says the UN General Assembly rejected that referendum as contrary to its provisions and resolutions. Newtral concludes that the article 10 dispute was real, but was not the point of confrontation in that session.

Publisher’s rating:

The claim paired a Wikipedia image listing Yang Hui-ju as legislator Tsai Yi-yu’s wife with the assertion that she was the daughter-in-law of former legislator Tsai Chi-fang. The review examined both whether Yang was Tsai Yi-yu’s spouse and where the image’s information came from. It reports that the relevant public records and Tsai’s own clarification did not support the asserted marriage.

Publisher’s rating: Falso

The claim concerns a message circulating on WhatsApp that alleged Brussels had ordered Spain to cut 400,000 public-sector positions. Newtral reports that it contacted both the European Parliament and the European Commission to check whether either institution had made such a request. The Parliament said it had not taken a position on the situation described; the Commission said it knew of no request to reduce Spain’s public workforce, either by a specified number or otherwise.

Publisher’s rating: C'eri quasi

The review says Marin, aged 34, could become the world’s youngest prime minister, and that all five parties in the governing coalition were led by women. But Marin’s selection followed a government crisis, not elections, and the proposed ministerial appointments included men, so the claim that Finland had a new all-female government was incorrect.
