PM Narendra Modi standing on a tricolour podium

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim concerned a circulating photo said to show Prime Minister Narendra Modi standing on a podium painted in India’s tricolour. FACTLY’s review says the image circulated in response to a Rashtriya Lok Samta Party tweet criticizing RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav for standing on a similar podium. The review concludes that the image attributed to Modi was altered, and that the original image showed Yadav instead. [S1]

Videos of recent protests in France

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

FACTLY investigated two protest videos circulated as footage of recent protests in France. Its account identifies the first as an older video associated with a demonstration in Hamburg, Germany, and the second as footage of a protest in Naples, Italy. The review concludes that neither video shows the claimed recent protests in France. For the Hamburg video, FACTLY says reverse-image searches of screenshots led to a YouTube video uploaded on 13 January 2020. The upload description referred to the German city of Hamburg “yesterday.” The review also compared the footage with Getty Images photos it identified as showing a 11 January 2020 demonstration in Hamburg against the oppression of Uighurs in China; it says the backgrounds in the photos and video were similar. For the other video, reverse-image searches led FACTLY to a YouTube news video uploaded on 24 October 2020, described as showing police cars attacked during a protest in Italy. The review says a related news article dated 23 October 2020 identified the protest as taking place in Naples, against a curfew imposed to curb coronavirus spread. These findings support the review’s conclusion that the two videos were misrepresented as footage from France.

Video of French President Emmanuel Macron being egged recently

Publisher’s rating: MISLEADING

The claim concerns a video of French President Emmanuel Macron being egged that circulated with the suggestion that the incident had happened recently. FACTLY’s review says the footage instead showed an incident from 2017, when Macron, then a presidential candidate, attended the Salon International de l’Agriculture farm fair in Paris. The review therefore identifies the video as old rather than evidence of a recent egging. To check the video’s provenance, the review reports searching for relevant keywords and finding a 2017 news article with a similar video. It also describes a YouTube search that found a news video with similar visuals and the description “France: Macron egged during visit to Agricultural Fair.” The review says that video dated back to 1 March 2017 and that the background setup matched the footage in the circulating post. FACTLY adds that it found no recent news reports of Macron being egged. It places the renewed circulation in the context of posts shared after Macron’s statements on Islam following the beheading of history teacher Samuel Paty. On the evidence described, the footage documents the 2017 farm-fair incident, not a recent one; presenting it as recent is misleading.

Myth DetectorPolitics & government

a Facebook page „ყოველდღიური მოვლენები“ (Daily events) shared a photo with a caption: “Chiatura today!” The photo shows how the flags of Georgian Dream are being burned. The description and the visual side of the photo create a perception that the events are taking place now. The photo was last reported to have had up to 700 shares and 1,500 reactions.

Publisher’s rating: The post, shared by the Daily Events is a manipulation, as it was taken not in Chiatura, but rather in Tbilisi, on Rustaveli Avenue, and it was initially published on June 21, 2019 in relation to the so-called “Gavrilov’s Night” protests. Publishing a 2019 photo in a manipulative way during a pre-election period creates a perception that there is an ongoing anti-governmental protest in Chiatura.
