Publisher’s rating: Vero

The claim concerned the ministers in Matteo Renzi’s government—not the entire government team—and whether that cabinet was the first and only one to have equal numbers of women and men. The review says Boschi made the statement after consultations with incoming prime minister Mario Draghi. It assesses the claim by comparing minister counts at the government’s inauguration with counts for earlier and later governments. The review reports that no earlier government had reached that proportion, and that subsequent cabinets also fell short: it lists five women among 18 ministers in Gentiloni’s government; five of 18 at the start of Conte I, later six; and seven of 22 at the start of Conte II, later eight of 23. On that comparison, the Renzi cabinet’s initial eight women among 16 ministers made it the first and only cabinet to reach parity. That parity did not last throughout the government’s term. It ended on 31 October 2014, when Paolo Gentiloni replaced Federica Mogherini as foreign minister. Later departures reduced the number of women further; by the end, the cabinet had six women among 16 ministers. The review also notes a limitation in the claim’s scope: counting undersecretaries as well as ministers would lower women’s share across the wider government team.

Amulya Leona, who chanted ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ slogans at Asaduddin Owaisi’s meeting participated in the ongoing farmers’ protests in Delhi

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim concerns a collage that purportedly shows Amulya Leona both at the meeting where she chanted “Pakistan Zindabad” and among participants in the ongoing farmers’ protests in Delhi. The review examined the two images separately and concluded that the protest photograph had been misidentified. It states that the first image shows Amulya Leona, while “the girl in the second photo is not Amulya Leona, but Valarmathi, a student activist from Tamil Nadu.” (S1: “The first photo in the post shows Amulya Leona, the girl who chanted ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ slogans at an anti-CAA meeting held by AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi last year. But, the girl in the second photo is not Amulya Leona, but Valarmathi, a student activist from Tamil Nadu.”) To investigate the images, FACTLY reports using reverse image searches. For the first image, it found similar photographs in news articles from 2020 and says a BBC article reported that Leona chanted the slogans at an anti-CAA meeting in Bengaluru, Karnataka. For the second, the search did not yield many details; the review then describes finding a Tamil-language social-media post with the same photo and a reply identifying the woman as Valarmathi. (S1: “On reverse image search of the photo shared in the post, a similar photo is found in several news articles published in 2020.”; “On reverse image search of the photo shared in the post, we could not find many details about the photo.”; “Responding to this tweet, another user mentioned that the girl in the second photo as Valarmathi, a native of Tamil Nadu.”) The review also reports that Valarmathi posted the same photograph to her Facebook page on 26 January 2021, and that her page included photos and videos of her participating in the Delhi farmers’ protest. This supports the review’s distinction between the person in the protest image and Leona: the image was linked to Valarmathi, not to the person in the first photo. (S1: “Valarmathi posted the same photo on her Facebook page on 26 January 2021.”; “Valarmathi shared photos and videos of her participation in Delhi farmers’ protest on her Facebook page.”)

Photo of the Bullock-cart rally organized in support of farmers protesting against the new farm laws

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim concerns a photo said to show a bullock-cart rally organized in support of farmers protesting India’s new farm laws. FACTLY reports that the photo instead shows an earlier rally organized by Youth Congress leaders in Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh, and says it was unrelated to the farmers’ protest. The review identifies the rally’s purpose as protesting rising fuel prices under the BJP government.
