Photo of a Tamil Nadu street with ‘Go Back Modi’ slogan painted on the road

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim concerns a photograph of “Go Back Modi” painted on a road, said to show anti-Modi graffiti in Tamil Nadu. FACTLY identifies the image as showing a protest in Kolkata, not Tamil Nadu, and reports that the protest was against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC), during Narendra Modi’s visit to Kolkata in January 2020. The review says a Kolkata-based journalist had shared a similar image from Esplanade on 11 January 2020. To investigate the image’s location and origin, FACTLY reports conducting a reverse-image search, which found the journalist’s post, and locating January 2020 news articles showing a similar scene from another angle. Those articles also described the scene as a protest against the CAA and NRC in Kolkata. The review further notes that a clearer version of the journalist’s photograph showed a sign identifying a Metro Channel control post and Are Street Police Station beside the road. FACTLY says it used that sign as a clue to search Google Maps and locate the place in Kolkata. Taken together, the image comparison, contemporaneous reporting, and location clue support the review’s conclusion that the photograph was misidentified as being from Tamil Nadu: the image instead depicts a Kolkata protest scene.

விவசாயிகள் இயக்கத்தில் ஜிகாதி ஓவைசியின் மேடையில் இருந்து பாகிஸ்தான் ஜிந்தாபாத் கோஷங்களை எழுப்பியவர் என்ன பயன்?

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim concerns two photographs shared together: one showing a woman on stage with Asaduddin Owaisi, and another showing a woman at a farmers’ protest. The post alleges that the woman who shouted “Pakistan Zindabad” at Owaisi’s event also took part in the farmers’ movement. Vishvas News reports that its investigation found the photographs show different women: Amulya Leona at the Owaisi event and Valarmathi in the farmers’ protest photo. The review therefore addresses the identity link at the centre of the claim, rather than whether either woman attended the events described.

Video of Nitin Gadkari criticizing PM Modi amid the ongoing farmers’ protests

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim was that a video showed Union Minister Nitin Gadkari criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the handling of the ongoing farmers’ protests. The review identifies the footage as a 2011 press meet instead: Gadkari was criticizing the then Congress government and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in connection with the government’s response to Anna Hazare’s protests. The footage therefore does not show Gadkari speaking about the later farmers’ protests. (S1: “This video shows the 2011 press meet of Nitin Gadkari, criticizing the then Congress government and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.”) To check the video’s provenance and content, the review says it examined a segment from 0:08 to 0:38, where Gadkari criticizes the Congress government over suppression of the right to protest and refers to its actions concerning Anna Hazare’s protest against corruption. It also reports searching for the footage using keywords and finding the same video on the BJP’s official YouTube channel. (S1: “On observing this video from 0.08 to 0.38 seconds, we could see Nitin Gadkari criticizing the Congress government for suppressing the freedom to protest in the country.”; “When we searched for this video using these keywords, we found the same video on the BJP’s official YouTube channel.”) The review reports that BJP published the video on 16 August 2011, with the footage described as visuals from a press meet held on 15 August 2011. It also cites contemporaneous reporting that Gadkari criticized Manmohan Singh’s position on Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption fast and the UPA government’s arrest of Hazare in Delhi. This identifies the event and political context as distinct from the farmers’ protests. (S1: “BJP published this video on 16 August 2011. The video is reported as the visuals from the BJP press meet, held on 15 August 2011.”; “In the press meet, Nitin Gadkari slammed the UPA government over Anna Hazare’s arrest in Delhi ahead of his fast over a strong Lokpal bill.”)
