Ajit Doval tweeted ‘”POK” is Part of “INDIA” And We Will Take it Soon.!!’

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim concerned a social-media post attributing to Ajit Doval a tweet saying that Pakistan-occupied Kashmir was part of India and would be taken soon. FACTLY’s investigation focused on whether Doval had posted it himself. The review states that he had no official Twitter account, so he could not have made tweets through an official account of his own. FACTLY also checked the account named in the circulated post, @AjitDoval_Ind. It found that the account identified itself as a fan account, not Doval’s official account, and the purported tweet could not be found there. The review says the post might therefore have been deleted or altered; it does not establish which of those possibilities occurred. As an additional check, the review searched for news reports of a statement by Doval about Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and found none. It mentions a Hindustan Times report about a different matter: a government official attributed to Doval the idea of including weather reports and forecasts for Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in television broadcasts. That reporting does not corroborate the alleged tweet. Taken together, the account check and the absence of a reported statement led the review to conclude that Doval did not make the claimed tweet.

FACT CHECK: ජාතිය ඇමතීම බලන ජනපතිගේ ඡායාරුපයක් ද ?

Publisher’s rating: Altered

The review examines an image shared with the caption that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa was watching his June 25, 2021 national address on television. It reports that the address was broadcast on the night of June 25 and that the image circulated on social media the following day, including in a satirical context. The question was whether the image actually showed him watching that address. The investigation found that the same image had appeared at least a year earlier. It located a July 2020 publication of the image by Mawuratanews, accompanying a story about an order concerning candidates using their own photographs in campaigning for the 2020 general election. In that earlier version, the television screen showed Rajapaksa speaking at an Eliya programme, rather than footage of the June 2021 national address. The review says it compared the 2020 and newly circulating images and found them to be the same photograph. The review therefore concludes that the image being shared as a scene from the June 2021 address was an edited use of an older photograph. It also qualifies that finding: without obtaining the original photograph, the investigators could not establish whether the older image itself had been altered. Nor could they independently verify whether Rajapaksa actually watched the June 25 address on television; their check concerned the circulated image, not that separate question.

FACT CHECK: වියත්මග සභාපතිකම නාමල්ට ලබාදීම පිළිබඳ සාකච්ඡාවක්?

Publisher’s rating: Misleading

The claim questioned whether Viyathmaga had discussed appointing Namal Rajapaksa as its chair. The review describes social-media posts attributing the proposal to a senior-level meeting, and says it asked a Viyathmaga member whether any agreement or discussion had taken place about giving the chairmanship to him. Its account therefore focuses on the specific alleged appointment discussion, rather than on whether Namal had met Viyathmaga members for another purpose. According to the review, Viyathmaga member Sandamali Ekanayake said there had been no discussion about such an agreement. She also said that Gotabaya Rajapaksa was the organization’s current chair and that there was no intention to change that at the time. The review reports a separate, recent discussion with Namal about future work involving political authorities and Viyathmaga members, which it says had been misinterpreted as a chairmanship discussion. The review says it also contacted Namal Rajapaksa’s media division, which rejected the circulating report. Its conclusion is that the claim of a Viyathmaga discussion proposing Namal for chair was false, while the separate discussion about future work supplied a possible source of the misinterpretation. The evidence presented is the review’s account of statements from Ekanayake and Namal’s media division; the excerpt does not provide independent meeting records or direct quotations from those sources.
