FACT CHECK:

Publisher’s rating: Altered

The claim concerns a photograph circulated as showing MP Patali Champika Ranawaka wearing a sticker opposing violence against women during a silent protest in Parliament on November 25. The review reports that opposition MPs wore the stickers and orange armbands in response to a statement made during the budget debate, but says it found no photograph or footage showing Champika wearing the sticker. It also reports that Champika’s coordinator said he attended Parliament briefly that day and wore only an orange armband. To investigate the image, the review compared it with a photograph of MP Buddhika Pathirana taken from a similar angle. It concluded that the circulated image had been made by editing Champika’s head onto Pathirana’s photograph. Thus, the image was not an unaltered photograph of Champika wearing the protest sticker; the account distinguishes the edited image from the separate, documented protest and Champika’s reported attendance. The review also examined a separate image circulated as showing MP Rishad Bathiudeen wearing the sticker. It reports that Bathiudeen said he did not attend Parliament that day, and traces the underlying image to a video posted from his official account on June 18, 2019. The review’s conclusion concerns manipulation of the images, not either politician’s views or conduct regarding violence against women.

Priyanka gandhi tweet for Nehru

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim concerns a viral image of a tweet allegedly posted by Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, with an objectionable comment about Jawaharlal Nehru. Vishvas News reports that it investigated the image and found that it was an edited version of an older tweet, rather than an authentic post containing that comment. The review describes the viral post as circulating on social media and says a Facebook user had uploaded it on 20 November.

Photo showing Hun Sen riding motorbike with Cambodian king

Publisher’s rating: Altered

The review investigated photos shared online as showing Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen riding a motorbike with King Norodom Sihamoni. It reports that the images circulated on social media, including in a Facebook group, and that the scene was also published on a website. The review’s conclusion is that the image was edited; it says the photo did not show Hun Sen riding with the King. To trace the image, the investigators say they used Google Reverse Image Search. They found a matching photo on Hun Sen’s official Facebook page, posted on December 21, 2019. The review says Hun Sen’s accompanying text identified the photo as taken on June 17, 2016, near Koh Kong Bridge. It also located a same-format image published by Post Khmer on June 21, 2016, with a caption about Hun Sen riding without a helmet. The review cites a further report from Youth Cambodia, published June 24, 2016, which it says also showed Hun Sen riding a motorbike. That report’s quoted description says an official from Hun Sen’s cabinet confirmed he might ride to a police station to pay a fine. Together, the identified earlier images and reporting support the review’s account that the circulated scene was altered, rather than a photograph of Hun Sen riding with the Cambodian King.

FACT CHECK:

Publisher’s rating: False

The claim concerns social-media posts attributing the same absurd-sounding promise—giving white canes to one million “අඳ ගොවීන්”—to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa. The review says it examined posts making that allegation and found the images they used had been altered. It distinguishes the phrase in the posts from the original remarks shown in the videos it identifies. For Rajapaksa, the review identifies a Hiru TV news broadcast from 26 October 2019, during an election campaign rally. It says the authentic footage concerned his pledge to work to resolve problems, and that this was changed in the circulated image into the white-cane statement. The review provides a link to the video as the comparison source. The review separately says it investigated the image attributed to Premadasa, found it had also been edited, and links to the video it identifies as authentic. It reports that his remark in that footage was that he could not meet Muslim families affected by a disaster—not the white-cane promise. Thus the two attributions are addressed using separate original-video comparisons, rather than being treated as one statement.

Video of security personnel stopping Shivraj Singh Chauhan from walking beside PM Narendra Modi

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim concerns a video said to show Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s security personnel stopping Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan as he walked beside Modi. FACTLY identifies the person who interrupted Chouhan as Bhopal Collector Avinash Lavania, not a security guard. It says Lavania stopped Chouhan to discuss an issue related to the inauguration of the Rani Kamalapati railway station in Bhopal, and that Chouhan resumed walking with Modi afterward. FACTLY describes using reverse image searches of screenshots from the circulating video to find a video with similar visuals posted by NDTV journalist Anurag Dwary. The review says Dwary clarified that the person interrupting Chouhan was Lavania, and that NDTV and other news websites also reported this identification. This evidence addresses the people and incident shown in the claim, rather than merely a similar video or unrelated event. The review also reports that Chouhan himself clarified that Lavania stopped him to discuss an important issue related to the station inauguration, and that the Bhopal Collector Office’s official Twitter account issued a clarification about the viral video. Together with the identification of Lavania and the reported continuation of Chouhan’s walk with Modi, this contradicts the claim that security personnel stopped him.
