FACTLYPolitics & government

Rahul Gandhi says, “We are not fighting against the government; we are fighting against the whole Infrastructure of India.”

Publisher’s rating: MISLEADING

The claim concerns a clipped video in which Rahul Gandhi says the opposition is fighting the “whole Infrastructure of India.” FACTLY’s review identifies the clip as an excerpt from a press conference on 5 August 2022 and says it checked a video streamed by India Today. The review reports that Gandhi made a similar statement at 12:18, but that this was part of a longer answer which began at 11:18. Its account therefore distinguishes the authenticity of the words from the impression created by sharing them without the surrounding explanation. In the fuller answer, Gandhi was discussing how opposition parties challenge a ruling party through institutions, including the judiciary, electoral structure and media. According to FACTLY, he argued that those institutions supported the government because each contained at least one person from the RSS, and then said the opposition was fighting not a political party but the country’s entire infrastructure. The review’s conclusion is that the excerpt was genuine but removed from that institutional context, making the post’s presentation misleading.

Tunç Soyer’in sevinç görüntülerinin güncel olduğu iddiası

Publisher’s rating: Yanlış

The claim concerned a video of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer jumping enthusiastically. It was shared as if he were celebrating a recent increase in water charges in İzmir. The review says the video did not show that event: it was recorded during the 23 April 2020 National Sovereignty and Children’s Day celebrations. In that celebration, Soyer travelled through the city on an open-top bus decorated with flags, accompanied by his wife, Neptün Soyer, and the municipal band. The footage had also attracted attention in 2020. [S1]

“ජනාධිපතිතුමා රන්ජන්ට සමාව නොදෙන එක සාධාරණයි” හරීන් පැවසුවා ද?

Publisher’s rating: Misleading

Fact Crescendo examined social-media posts attributing to Harin Fernando the statement that it was fair for the president not to pardon Ranjan Ramanayake. The review searched for the alleged statement in mainstream media reports and found none. It also contacted Fernando, who said the circulating claim using his name and photograph was false and that he had not made the statement. This directly weighs against attributing the quoted words to him. [S1]
