Video of Narendra Modi acknowledging the hardships faced by the Chhattisgarh people under the BJP rule

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim concerns a social-media clip presented as Modi acknowledging that people in Chhattisgarh suffered because of BJP rule. FACTLY reports that the clip does contain Modi speaking about losses and hardships, but that the excerpt cuts off words that identify the political context he was describing. Its conclusion is that the clip reverses the attribution of responsibility.

The claim concerned a viral video said to show a New York advertising screen displaying “Glory to urine” in place of “Glory to Ukraine” for Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky during his September 2023 visit. The review examined whether the footage was genuine and whether it came from Fox News. It reports that Fox News told dpa it had not published the video; the purported clip was absent from the network’s website, and the “Fox News Digital” logo appeared to have been added. The review also places the screen at the intersection of 8th Avenue and 42nd Street in New York. The investigation compared the viral footage with other records of the location. NBC News journalist Ben Collins visited the site and posted footage on September 21, 2023, that did not show the alleged message. The review also notes differences between that footage and the viral clip, including a McDonald’s sign visible in Collins’s video but missing from the viral video and Google Street View imagery. Those comparisons, alongside the absence of other recordings of the alleged display, led the review to conclude that the message had been added to the footage after filming. The review used visible details in the clip to date it independently of Zelensky’s visit. A Verizon advertisement for its “Welcome Unlimited” offer, launched July 12, 2022, places the footage after that date. Building changes visible in other material place it before January 2023. The review therefore says the clip was made between July and December 2022, not during Zelensky’s September 2023 visit. It also reports that the screen was managed by Big Outdoor, whose spokesperson told the Associated Press that no Ukraine-related advertisement had appeared on it.

Recent videos showing the reactions of diplomats and opposition party leaders of Canada over the ongoing diplomatic tensions between India and Canada

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The posts presented videos of Canadian opposition figures and a diplomat as recent reactions to the diplomatic tensions between India and Canada. FACTLY examined the videos’ earlier publication and event contexts and found that the footage predated the row over the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. For the video attributed to opposition leader Andrew Scheer, FACTLY found the same footage on The Canadian Press’s YouTube channel, published on 1 March 2018. It concerned questions about invitations to Jaspal Atwal, a pro-Khalistani activist convicted in an attempted murder, to events during Justin Trudeau’s 2018 visit to India. FACTLY distinguished that earlier dispute from Scheer’s later comments about the Nijjar case, noting the shared video “has nothing to do with the recent diplomatic row.” For the diplomat’s video, FACTLY found an ANI post dated 27 October 2022. It showed Canadian High Commissioner Cameron MacKay speaking during a visit to Gurdwara Bangla Sahib in Delhi and responding to a question about the Canadian government’s approach to Khalistani outfits. That event also preceded the tensions described in the posts. The review therefore identifies earlier, separate contexts for the footage rather than evidence of reactions to the current dispute.
