Publisher’s rating:

The claim concerns Rachel Star Withers and alleges that washing her hands with soap from a public restroom dispenser caused an infection that produced widespread sores and severe facial damage. The Taiwan FactCheck Center’s investigation examined that specific allegation, rather than disputing that Withers had experienced a serious facial skin condition. It located her YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram accounts and reports that those accounts included photographs and descriptions of her illness and recovery.

Publisher’s rating:

The review investigated a circulating message claiming that drinking cool water after a meal causes cancer. The message said cool water turns recently absorbed fat solid, interferes with digestion and leads to cancer; it was also attributed to Taipei mayor Ko Wen-je. The review checked both the attribution and the medical claim. The Taipei City Government’s deputy spokesperson said Ko had never made the statement, and the review concluded the message was not his opinion. For the health claim, the review consulted Chen Hsin-yu, a gastroenterologist at Cathay General Hospital. Chen said there was no scientific basis for the claim and explained that water cooler than body temperature is quickly brought above 30°C in the body, so it does not cause fat to solidify internally as the message described. The review also cautioned against the message’s implication that hot drinks are necessarily beneficial. Chen said excessively hot drinks can cause lasting burns at the esophagus and the junction between the esophagus and stomach, increasing the risk of esophageal and cardia cancers. The review further noted that heavy consumption of sugary drinks—and the associated obesity and metabolic risks—was a more important concern than avoiding cool water.
