The claim attributes a specific statement about the pandemic, a vaccine and accepting business failures to Angela Merkel, saying she made it at a press conference on 28 August 2020. The investigation identifies that conference as an event in Berlin focused mainly on coronavirus and foreign policy, with a possible vaccine also discussed. It then compares the viral wording with Merkel’s answer to a journalist asking when life might return to normal. According to the review, Merkel said that things would not return to normal while there was no vaccine or medicine, and that people could return to their usual behaviours if a vaccine or very good medicines became available. That answer does not include the claimed assertion about accepting bankruptcies. The review further reports that neither “bankruptcies” nor “insolvencies” appears anywhere in the conference transcript, and that the subject is not raised in substance either. Thus, the post’s alleged quotation is not supported by the documented proceedings.

Dies würden offizielle Zahlen der amerikanischen Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) belegen.

The claim arose from social media posts and a blog that cited CDC figures to argue that 94% of U.S. COVID-19 deaths were not actually caused by COVID-19. The review explains that the CDC information was not a study, but a dataset provided by the National Center for Health Statistics and analyzed by the CDC. The statistic was about what else was recorded on death certificates, not whether COVID-19 was absent as a cause. In the CDC data, COVID-19 was the only listed cause in 6% of the deaths. For the other 94%, the records listed one or more pre-existing conditions or additional causes alongside COVID-19. The review quotes the CDC’s explanation that those cases had an average of 2.6 additional conditions or causes. It also notes that the dataset covered deaths where COVID-19 was listed on the death certificate. Thus, the 94% figure does not establish that COVID-19 did not contribute to those deaths. The review also describes a comparison for Hamburg, Germany, using figures dated September 1, 2020: the city recorded 236 deaths attributed to COVID-19, while the Robert Koch Institute listed 266 cases. It reports that a study examining 80 deaths among people infected with SARS-CoV-2 concluded that 76 could be classified as COVID-19 deaths, while four were considered independent of COVID-19. These examples provide additional context, but the central correction rests on what the U.S. CDC statistic measured.

The review examined a Facebook post from July 2020 claiming that Austria’s Medical Chamber had declared its pandemic measures for doctors over because the infection had ended. The agency reported that a Medical Chamber spokesperson told dpa by email on August 20 that the post was false. The spokesperson said the Chamber’s pandemic measures and recommendations remained in force and added that only the World Health Organization could announce the pandemic’s end. The review also checked the Chamber’s publicly available material: it reported that the website still carried information and recommendations for doctors, links to other health institutions, and a guide for office-based physicians dated August 13, 2020. As an additional point of comparison, it noted that the WHO was still describing coronavirus as a pandemic as of September 1, 2020. These checks address the post’s specific claim of an official end to the Chamber’s measures; the excerpt does not provide further details about the post’s author or its reach.

The review examines a Facebook post attributing claims about mask sterility, wear time, and cloth masks to microbiologist Antoine Khoury. It finds that the distinction about sterility is real, but that sterility is not a measure of a mask’s ability to protect against coronavirus. A virologist explains that “sterile” describes masks being free of microorganisms when unpacked; they cease to be sterile once exposed to the environment. [S1]

Publisher’s rating: De stelling is fout.

The Facebook post claimed that Italy had officially determined that COVID-19 was a bacterium and that it could be treated with paracetamol. The review compared those claims with information from Italy’s Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO), both of which it quotes directly. The ministry said COVID-19 is caused by the virus SARS-CoV-2, not a bacterium, and that there were no therapies with proven effectiveness; available treatments addressed symptoms. It therefore did not support the post’s claim that paracetamol was an established treatment for the disease. The WHO’s cited guidance likewise says COVID-19 is caused by a virus, not a bacterium, and describes bacterial infection as a possible complication rather than the cause of COVID-19. It also says there was no authorized medicine to cure COVID-19. That distinction matters: antibiotics may be used for a bacterial complication, but the review’s cited material does not present them—or paracetamol—as a cure for COVID-19. The review also cites research examining the virus in COVID-19 cases in northern Italy and quotes microbiologist Maria Rita Gismondo, of Milan’s Luigi Sacco hospital, calling it unthinkable that a bacterium caused COVID-19. This evidence supports the distinction between the viral disease and occasional bacterial complications; it does not establish paracetamol as a COVID-19 treatment.
