The posts made two connected allegations about Sanna Elkadiri, who received the first Covid-19 vaccination in the Netherlands: that she was an actress rather than a care worker, and that her first vaccination had already been arranged on 10 April 2020. The review examines both her work history and the two earlier news reports cited by the Facebook post. For her occupation, the review reports that Elkadiri had worked for several years at Het Wereldhuis, a care home belonging to Zorggroep Elde Maasduinen. The care group confirmed her employment in a post about her vaccination. The review also cites a February 2018 interview in ActiZ’s professional magazine, where Elkadiri said she had then been working at Het Wereldhuis for nearly five years as a verzorgende IG, a care role. The cited dates do not establish a prior vaccination arrangement. The review says the Facebook post pointed to an NRC article dated 1 May 2019 and a BN De Stem article dated 10 April 2020. NRC reported on the care-home ward where Elkadiri worked and discussed her work, but did not mention vaccination or coronavirus. BN De Stem followed a Nieuwsuur report about a coronavirus outbreak at Het Wereldhuis; Elkadiri spoke about that outbreak on her ward. The review says neither the report nor the article mentioned vaccination.

The Facebook post described a 91-year-old care-home resident who died shortly after receiving a Covid-19 vaccination, and treated the timing as grounds to call him Switzerland’s first vaccination death. The review confirms the death occurred, but distinguishes that fact from evidence that the vaccine caused it. Swissmedic confirmed on December 30 that the resident in canton Lucerne died several days after vaccination; the canton’s health and social affairs department also confirmed the case, according to the review’s account of reporting by the Luzerner Zeitung. The review reports that Swissmedic examined the case with the cantonal health authority. Its assessment was that neither the resident’s medical history nor the acute course of illness indicated a direct causal link; the reported evidence instead pointed to natural causes, also noted on the death certificate. The resident had several serious pre-existing conditions. The review also explains why a death occurring after vaccination does not, by itself, establish that it was caused by vaccination: Swissmedic records deaths occurring in temporal connection with vaccination in a database of suspected adverse effects, but says that recording does not automatically demonstrate causation. The post’s “first vaccination death” wording therefore presents timing as proof of a causal category that the review says is not used in Swissmedic’s drug-safety monitoring.

The review examines two claims circulating on social media about the mRNA vaccines used against Covid-19: that vaccination introduces foreign genetic material into the body, and that the vaccine’s genetic code becomes part of a recipient’s genetic material. It distinguishes the vaccines’ mechanism from that of more established vaccines, which commonly contain weakened or killed pathogens, or parts of them. The review says the mRNA vaccines provide cells with instructions to make a component of the virus’s outer protein, prompting an immune response. On the central question of genetic incorporation, the review says the vaccine mRNA is not built into human genetic material. It quotes Clemens Wendtner, head of infectious diseases at Munich Klinik Schwabing, giving two reasons: mRNA and DNA have different chemical structures, and the information flow described is from DNA to RNA. The review adds that the vaccine’s instructions reach cell areas where viral components are made without passing through the cell nucleus, where genetic material is stored. It also notes that mRNA is unstable and that lipid coatings are used to keep it stable long enough to work. The article reports that, as of January 8, the European Union had authorized the BioNTech/Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines. It says the vaccine had been tested in several studies involving animals and tens of thousands of people, with no indications of serious side effects in those studies; it also cautions that no medicine is absolutely safe and says recipients would be followed over time, with observational studies planned. Those safety qualifications are distinct from the review’s explanation of why the mRNA is not incorporated into recipients’ genetic material.

The review examines a video said to show a doctor warning people about mRNA vaccination from a police car during a Frankfurt protest. It identifies the event as an authorized anti-vaccination car convoy in northern Frankfurt am Main on 3 January 2020. In the footage, recorded from a balcony in the Preungesheim district, a loudspeaker message includes the words “Urgent warning to the population: Don’t get vaccinated,” followed by conspiracy claims about vaccination and Bill Gates. The key question is where the announcements came from. The video shows a police vehicle with its blue lights on in front of the convoy, followed by cyclists and a dark blue estate car, which could make the announcements seem to come from the police vehicle. But Frankfurt police stated on Twitter on 4 January that the message came from a demonstration car behind their loudspeaker vehicle. The review also points to a visible fitting on the estate car, which other photos identify as a loudspeaker. The footage also shows police vehicles at the end of the demonstration. The review says they were there for security, not as participants. It does not establish who spoke through the loudspeaker or whether that person was a doctor; the review says this could not be verified. Thus, the video supports that warnings were broadcast during the convoy, but not that they came from a police car or that the speaker was a doctor.
