The review investigates claims that vaccinated people were more likely than unvaccinated people to catch Omikron, focusing on two examples: a graphic attributed to Germany’s Robert Koch Institute (RKI) and interpretations of a Danish study. The graphic circulated with figures suggesting that most reported Omikron cases were vaccinated. Deutsche Welle reports that the RKI said the graphic was not produced by the institute, although similar figures had appeared in an RKI weekly report. The institute acknowledged an error in that report: the number of unvaccinated people with Omikron had been understated, and a further number was missed in an update before a correction on January 3. The RKI also said those data could not be used to calculate vaccine effectiveness. The review explains why case shares alone do not establish that vaccination makes infection more likely. With a larger vaccinated population, vaccinated people can make up a substantial share of cases even when vaccination reduces risk; vaccines also do not prevent every infection. The review notes that 71.6 percent of Germany’s population was fully vaccinated as of January 7. It further describes early evidence that protection against infection was weaker for Omikron than for earlier variants, while vaccination continued to offer protection against severe illness. The Danish study compared infection rates among vaccinated and unvaccinated people during the first weeks after Omikron was identified in Denmark. Its estimates became negative after three months, but study co-author and epidemiologist Christian Holm Hansen attributed those values to statistical bias, including more frequent testing among vaccinated people and differences in who could travel or attend events. The review also notes that the study did not distinguish mild from severe disease. It concludes that the German and Danish figures cited do not demonstrate that Omikron was more infectious for vaccinated people; they do not, by themselves, establish vaccine effectiveness or that vaccination caused greater infection risk.

Wearing masks causes carbon dioxide poisoning.

Publisher’s rating: False

Related reporting on haze protection discusses whether wearing a respirator can cause carbon dioxide poisoning. It distinguishes discomfort from poisoning: a well-sealed respirator can make breathing take more effort, and some users may feel discomfort, tiredness or a mild headache. The article says current evidence does not support dangerous carbon dioxide poisoning from normal use in healthy adults. That evidence weighs against the claim as stated, but the excerpt does not provide the studies behind that conclusion or establish that every mask, user or pattern of use has the same effects. The article’s discussion concerns N95 and KN95 respirators, not every kind of face covering. It also notes that suitability can differ for particular groups: it reports that Malaysia’s Health Ministry haze guidance does not consider N95 respirators suitable for pregnant women. That qualification concerns suitability, not evidence that masks cause carbon dioxide poisoning.
