Pandemics follow a regular pattern by repeating every 100 years.

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

FACTLY examined a social-media infographic that presented COVID-19 as part of a century-long cycle, citing outbreaks around 1720, 1820 and 1920. Its review checked the dates and nature of those earlier events, then compared the proposed pattern with other major pandemics the infographic omitted. The dates do not form the sequence the post suggests. FACTLY reports that the Marseille Plague occurred from 1720 to 1722, the first cholera pandemic from 1817 to 1824, and the influenza pandemic from 1918 to 1919. Thus, the cholera and influenza dates do not match the post’s suggested 1820 and 1920 starting points. The review also says the 1720 Marseille outbreak was regional, not a pandemic. Most importantly, FACTLY points to major pandemics in intervening years: Asian flu in 1957–1958, Hong Kong flu in 1968–1969, and swine flu in 2009–2010. Their omission makes the infographic’s selected examples appear more regularly spaced than the broader record supports. FACTLY concludes that there is no empirical evidence for a 100-year pandemic cycle.
