The claim arose from a March 8, 2023, congressional hearing on the origins of SARS-CoV-2. Social-media posts circulated an excerpt of former CDC director Robert Redfield’s testimony and said he had admitted that Anthony Fauci created the virus in a Chinese laboratory using American taxpayers’ money. The review distinguishes what Redfield said from that interpretation: he favored the possibility of an accidental laboratory leak, but did not accuse Fauci of causing it or say that taxpayer money was used for that purpose. [S1] [S1] Redfield said that, to his knowledge, the Wuhan laboratory suspected of being the source of a leak had received a grant from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH). The review notes that the NIH had previously denied allegations concerning this funding, while also observing that questions remained. It emphasizes that Redfield’s statement about a grant did not implicate Fauci personally. [S1] The review also separates the funding and origin claims from posts alleging that Fauci was responsible for millions of deaths. It says Redfield did not make that accusation, and reports that the World Health Organization’s estimate at the time was nearly 6.9 million Covid-19 deaths worldwide, rather than the 7.7 million cited in some posts. The review says there was no conclusive proof then to confirm or rule out either a natural origin or an accidental laboratory origin; that uncertainty did not provide evidence that Fauci created the virus.
