‘Emotif Markilet’ is a cure for blood cancer, which is available for free at Yashoda Hematology Cancer Institute in Pune

Publisher’s rating: MISLEADING

The review examined a social-media claim that a medicine called “Emotif Markilet” cures blood cancer and is offered free at Yashoda Hematology Cancer Institute in Pune. It identifies the drug name as a distortion of imatinib mesylate and says the medicine is used for certain blood cancers, not as a cure for every type. The review describes its main use as treatment for chronic myeloid leukaemia, where it helps prevent the disease from progressing by reducing abnormal white blood cells. To assess the claim, the review searched for information about the alleged drug name, consulted an Adyar Cancer Institute notice about a similar message, and cited medical commentary and an answer from a verified doctor. The notice described “Imitinef mercilet” as a distortion of imatinib mesylate and said the medicine was available across India, rather than being exclusive to the Adyar institute. The review also reports that a hematologist called the related messages spam and that a doctor said medicines are selected according to the specific cancer; it does not present those sources as direct confirmation of the Pune offer. The review says it called the phone numbers in the post to check the claim about free availability at the Pune institute, but the numbers did not work. That leaves the specific offer unverified in the described investigation. Its decisive correction is narrower: imatinib mesylate can be used for some blood cancers, but it is not a cure-all for blood cancer. The review therefore rates the claim misleading.

The claim concerns a TikTok video that appears to show virologist Christian Drosten saying, “Masken bringen nichts, lassen Sie diesen Lappen im Gesicht weg.” The dpa investigation examined that specific clip, in which the words are presented as Drosten’s speech and accompanied by dramatic music. It reports that the video’s lip movements do not match the alleged words, an indication that the speech was manipulated rather than genuine. To investigate the footage’s origin, the review reports using a reverse image search. A suggested YouTube result showed a 15-minute compilation of Drosten’s remarks at a Berlin federal press conference on 9 March 2020. The camera angle matched the TikTok clip, and the same man crossed the frame in both videos. The review says this footage was the likely source of the TikTok clip. The alleged sentence does not appear in that compilation. At the moment the man crosses the frame, Drosten is discussing the limited new findings about the then-novel coronavirus; the review also reports that he did not say masks “nichts bringen” elsewhere in that speech. It cites a Phoenix recording of the entire 9 March press conference as evidence. Thus, the clip uses real event footage, but the review finds that the quoted words were not actually spoken in the source recording.

Publisher’s rating: Eerder onwaar

The statement under review, attributed in the article to Flemish politician Gwendolyn Rutten, presents a recent study as showing that hormone treatment during peri- or menopause is effective against dementia in women. The review says the study was narrower: it involved menopausal women who carried APO E4, a gene associated with greater Alzheimer’s risk, and compared women given hormone therapy for six months with a similar group who did not receive it. The measured outcome was a blood biomarker linked to Alzheimer’s risk, not the occurrence of dementia. The review reports that the biomarker concentration was lower in the treated group after six months. That result does not establish that the treatment prevents Alzheimer’s or dementia. As the review explains, the researchers inferred reduced risk from a change in the biomarker, but the study did not show that APO E4 carriers actually developed Alzheimer’s less often. The review also notes that the value of these blood biomarkers for estimating Alzheimer’s risk was disputed, and cites a European-American task force calling for their refinement and saying they were not then sensitive enough to identify people genuinely at risk. The review adds that prior research did not consistently support a protective effect: it points to a large controlled study of women aged 65 and older in which women receiving hormone therapy developed dementia more often, not less. Taken together, the reported findings support a limited observation about a biomarker in a specific group—not the broader claim that hormone treatment is effective against dementia in women. The review therefore treats the optimistic interpretation as unproven.

Video zeigt Fake-Impfungen u.a. bei Londons Bürgermeister Sadiq Khan.
