En cada cita electoral a la que nos presentamos vamos creciendo

Begoña Villacís, Ciudadanos’s candidate for Madrid city council, claimed that the party grew at every election it contested. The review tests that broad claim by comparing Ciudadanos’s results in recent regional and general elections; it finds the claim fits the regional contests examined but not the general-election record as a whole. The article describes its comparison directly: “Ciudadanos ha mejorado sus resultados en todas las últimas citas electorales autonómicas pero no en todos los comicios generales.” In the regional elections cited, the party improved on its prior results. In the Valencian election on 28 April, it won 18 seats and 470,676 votes, compared with 13 seats and 309,121 votes in 2015. In Andalusia, its 2 December 2018 result—661,371 votes and 21 seats—was above its 2015 result of 369,896 votes and 9 seats. In Catalonia, it increased from 736,364 votes and 25 seats in 2015 to 1,109,732 votes and 36 seats in the election of 21 December 2017. The article summarizes this pattern: “en los recientes procesos electorales autonómicos Ciudadanos ha obtenido mejores resultados”. The general-election comparison provides the qualification. Ciudadanos improved between 26 June 2016 and 28 April 2019, winning 4,256,023 votes and 57 seats in 2019, against 3,141,236 votes and 32 seats in June 2016. But it had performed better in the December 2015 general election than in June 2016: the article gives 40 seats and 3,514,528 votes for 2015, against 32 seats and 3,141,570 votes for 2016. Thus the rise in the most recent general election does not make the claim true for every contest. The review concludes that the statement needs this qualification: “en las elecciones generales de 2016 empeoraron con respecto a las de 2015.”

El vídeo del supuesto pucherazo en Melilla de 2015
Publisher’s rating: Falso
The video under review shows a woman being accused of handing over a large number of postal votes at a post office in Melilla. It was circulated with messages implying that it showed an attempted fraud in Spain’s 28 April 2019 general election. The review says the footage was not from 2019: it had been available on YouTube since May 2015, during the period of the municipal elections held on 24 May that year. The reported incident was also contested. Coalición por Melilla (CpM) reported the matter to police, and its then number-three candidate, Hassan Mohatar, said that a normal batch would be ten or fifteen votes, rather than forty or fifty. The PP, by contrast, defended the conduct as legal, saying the votes had already been cast and were simply being delivered to the post office. Thus, the evidence supports identifying the footage as a 2015 incident, but the excerpt describes allegations and opposing explanations rather than establishing that fraud occurred.

BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate from Ranaghat, West Bengal dressed as Hanuman
Publisher’s rating: FALSE
The claim concerned a photograph circulating on Facebook that purported to show the BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate from Ranaghat, West Bengal, dressed as Hanuman. FACTLY’s review says the man in the image was not the candidate, Jagannath Sarkar. Instead, the BJP used a man dressed as Lord Hanuman as part of the election campaign for Sarkar, who was seen campaigning in an open-top vehicle.
