Publisher’s rating: Falso

The claim concerned a widely shared video that appeared to show Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden asleep and snoring during a live morning interview. Univision’s review found that the video was deceptively edited from two separate clips, rather than being footage of Biden in that interview setting. The review traced the presenter’s segment to a 2011 KBAK-TV clip. In that original footage, the presenter was trying to interview singer Harry Belafonte. The other portion came from a public town hall Biden held with Hillary Clinton in April. In the unaltered town-hall clip, Biden looks downward for about 15 seconds and then looks up; Clinton was discussing the pandemic’s effect on women. The review also reports that neither original clip contains snoring. The edited video added the snoring sound and a lower-third identifying Biden as being on air. Thus, the apparent interview, Biden’s position in that setting, and the snoring were assembled to create a misleading impression; the source material does not show Biden sleeping during a morning interview.

Deutsche Presse-AgenturElections & voting

Image of a woman wearing a placard with the message– ‘The GOVERNMENT says ‘Triple Talaq’ is banned in 21 countries, but it does not say that EVM is banned in the whole world’.

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The review investigates an image circulated with a placard saying that the government bans Triple Talaq in 21 countries but does not ban EVMs worldwide. It concludes that the image was edited: according to the review, the original placard referred to reservation, not EVMs. To examine the image’s provenance, the investigators used reverse image search and found posts and tweets showing a similar image with the reservation wording. They compared the versions: in the images with reservation, “GOVERNMENT” and “RESERVATION” are the same colour and font size. In the circulated version, “GOVERNMENT” and “EVM” differ in colour and font size, which the review identifies as signs of editing. The review also checked the separate assertion about EVMs, reporting that countries still use them nationally or in parts of their territory. Its conclusion about the pictured placard rests on the image comparison: the circulated image substitutes EVM-related wording for the reservation message in the version the review identifies as original.
