A photo shows mail-in ballots cast for President Donald Trump discarded on the side of a road

Publisher’s rating: False

The claim concerned a Facebook photo of boxes of mail on the roadside, presented as mail-in ballots cast for Donald Trump in the 2020 election. USA TODAY traced the image to a Facebook post from Sept. 30, 2018, and reported that the incident shown involved mail—not ballots—from the Roxborough Station Post Office in Philadelphia. The review says a postal inspector investigated and determined that a worker had dumped mail intended for delivery on Aug. 8, 2018. Because Trump was not up for reelection in 2018, the mail in the photograph could not have contained ballots cast for him in the 2020 election. The review also separated the photo claim from the broader Facebook post’s claims about discarded Trump ballots elsewhere. It reported that the California example involved empty envelopes from a previous election, not ballots, and that the Pennsylvania incident was separate from the roadside photograph and did not involve the Postal Service. In Luzerne County, nine military ballots were incorrectly discarded; seven were recovered and were marked for Trump. The review attributed the error to a temporary contractor sorting ballots and said the county cooperated with the FBI to recover them.
