Video showing Bhojpuri Star Dinesh Lal Yadav campaigning for Samajwadi Party recently
Publisher’s rating: MISLEADING
The claim concerned a video shared as showing Bhojpuri star Dinesh Lal Yadav, known as Nirahua, campaigning for the Samajwadi Party recently. FACTLY’s review says the footage instead shows a campaign appearance in 2017, so presenting it as recent gives a false impression of when it was recorded. The review identifies the event as a road show in support of SP candidate Sushma Sonkar in the Saidpur municipal elections. To check the video’s provenance, the review says it used reverse image search on screenshots and found a YouTube video with the same visuals. That video was uploaded on 26 November 2017. The review connects the visuals to Nirahua and actress Amrapali Dubey campaigning for the SP in Saidpur, Uttar Pradesh. Thus, the evidence addresses the same footage and places it years before the post’s claim that it was recent. The review also supplies political context: it says Nirahua joined the BJP in 2019, later contested against Akhilesh Yadav in the Lok Sabha election in Azamgarh and lost, and was fielded again by the BJP for the Azamgarh by-election. That later affiliation helps explain why the old SP campaign video could be misleading when recirculated as current, but does not change the review’s central dating evidence: the matching visuals were online in 2017 and depicted a 2017 campaign.

The claim alleges that the Candlelight Party (CLP) received 56% of the vote—4,347,600 votes—in Cambodia’s 2022 commune election, and asks where those votes and 904 commune seats have gone. The review examined election-result figures published by Cambodia’s National Election Committee (NEC), as well as a preliminary report prepared by the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), and sought comments from party and election officials. It reports that the viral claim circulated just after the election, held on 5 June 2022. (S1) The review distinguishes the CPP’s preliminary internal report from the official result. It says CPP spokesperson Sok Eysan described his party’s report as an unofficial internal prediction, while NEC spokesperson Hang Puthea also characterized it as an internal summary and said the official result would follow. That CPP report put CLP at more than 1.6 million votes, or 22.23% of voters who turned out—not 56%. (S1) The decisive comparison is with the NEC’s announced result: the review reports that CLP won 1.61 million ballots, or 22.25% of the total, while CPP received 5.37 million, or 74.32%. It also describes a compilation of the NEC temporary result showing 1,604,962 CLP ballots and 5,355,035 CPP ballots. These figures do not support the claim that CLP received 4,347,600 votes or a 56% share. (S1)

The claim questioned where Candlelight Party (CLP) supporters could vote when a ballot showed only one party. Fact Crescendo Cambodia examined a social-media photo of a ballot bearing only the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) name and logo, used with a caption asking, “Cheap! Where can CLP supporters vote for in the ballot which has only one box?” The review says the post implied that CLP had been removed from the ballot so its supporters could not vote. The image concerned the 2022 commune election in Sangkat Phsar Deum Kor, Phnom Penh. To check why CLP was absent, the review reports interviewing CLP spokesman Thach Setha and National Election Committee (NEC) spokesman Hang Puthea. Setha said CLP candidates in that commune were removed after the NEC found that two could not read and write Khmer; he also said CLP candidate lists in 10 Phnom Penh communes were removed for incompleteness. Puthea said only CPP candidates were allowed to run in Phsar Deum Kor and described the removals as following candidate eligibility or completeness problems. He reported that 86 CLP candidates nationwide were removed for failing to complete required criteria. The review’s finding turns on the difference between a one-party ballot and a party being removed from a ballot on which it was eligible to run. It says the ballot shown was correct for Phsar Deum Kor because CPP was the only party running there; it attributes CLP’s absence to the NEC’s removal of its candidates, not to the ballot omitting an eligible CLP list. Thus, the photo alone did not establish the broader implication that CLP supporters had been denied a place on a ballot where the party was running.
