Publisher’s rating: Falso
The claim concerns a Facebook video using Chilean Finance Minister Mario Marcel’s image to promote an automatically operated investment platform and promise earnings of two million pesos a week. The review describes the video as saying Marcel had enabled a platform that “cierra automáticamente operaciones rentables con una inversión mínima” and inviting viewers to invest in a national bank project. It reports that the post had been published on August 25, 2023, and that the video had been viewed more than 56,000 times. The review’s decisive evidence is a direct response from Chile’s Ministry of Finance. After contacting the ministry about the post, the outlet received a reply from communications chief Miriam Leiva stating that the information was “completamente falsa.” The review also reports that a separate keyword search found a Fast Check verification rejecting a similar claim and noting that the Central Bank does not offer financial products to the general public. The video’s presentation also misidentified Marcel: it called him director of the National Bank, whereas the review identifies him as finance minister at the time. It notes that he had been president of Chile’s Central Bank starting in 2016, but resigned in January 2022. The review concludes that Marcel did not promote the promised earnings platform; it attributes the claim to a deceptive post using his name and image.
The BR24 Faktenfuchs review examines a statement by CSU politician Joachim Herrmann in the BR24 election debate on September 6, 2023. He said Bavaria still had the lowest unemployment rate among Germany’s federal states and was stronger than other states in economic growth. The review checks the two parts separately, using unemployment figures for August 2023 and price-adjusted GDP growth for 2022. On unemployment, the review reports that Bavaria’s rate was 3.5 percent, the lowest among the states. It compares this with 4.1 percent in Baden-Württemberg, 7.4 percent in North Rhine-Westphalia, and 11 percent in Bremen; the national rate was 5.8 percent. These figures support Herrmann’s comparison of Bavaria’s unemployment rate with those of the other states. On economic growth, the review reports that Bavaria’s price-adjusted GDP growth rate in 2022 was 2.1 percent. That was higher than the rate in nine other states, but six states recorded higher growth than Bavaria. Bremen’s rate was 5.1 percent, while Germany’s overall growth was 1.8 percent. Thus the comparison supports saying that Bavaria outperformed some states, but not that it outgrew all or most of them; the review’s qualification is that Herrmann omitted the higher-growth states.
