The investigation examined a social-media collage presented as aerial images of Kahramanmaraş before and after the earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria on 6 February 2023. It confirmed that the images show Kahramanmaraş, but found that the collage does not document the city at two different times: its pictures show different parts of the city, apparently around the same period after the earthquakes. To establish the locations, the fact-checkers compared recognizable features in the images with Google Maps. Hills with white streaks and a junction visible in the upper picture could be located, but those features did not appear in the lower picture. Instead, other landmarks in the lower picture—including a large white area in the hills and a green zone—matched locations farther east. A green zone was recognizable in both pictures, but at opposite edges, consistent with the images showing different parts of the city rather than a before-and-after view. The investigation also compared the pictures with an aerial video of Kahramanmaraş that Turkish fact-checkers at Teyit had identified as filmed after the earthquakes. The images were not direct frames from the video, but the snow on the hills looked very similar. The video showed both the area represented in the lower picture and, briefly at its start, the area represented in the upper picture. The fact-checkers said they could not find pre-earthquake versions of the pictures or video, and considered it likely that the images showed the city after the earthquake.

Publisher’s rating: False

The review investigated videos shared as footage of the earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria on February 6, 2023. It says it examined two examples: a clip presented as showing unusually high waves off Turkey after the quake, and another described as footage of the disaster near the Turkey–Syria border. The article’s investigation found that neither clip showed the recent earthquake. For the wave footage, the reviewers used InVID to obtain frames and then ran a reverse-image search. They found a similar video uploaded to YouTube about five years earlier, with a title identifying the scene as a minor tsunami in Durban, South Africa. The article connects that footage to a March 2017 event reported as a Durban tsunami, rather than to the 2023 Turkey earthquake. For the second clip, the review traced an earlier appearance on Twitter to October 31, 2020, where it was identified as footage of an earthquake in Izmir, Turkey. It also reports that Iran-based Mehr News Agency published the video that day. The article says the Izmir earthquake occurred on October 30, 2020, and therefore the clip’s location in Turkey did not establish that it showed the separate February 2023 Turkey–Syria earthquake.
