Claim: misinformation shared that dalit woman attacked for bathing in river I

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim concerns a video shared as showing RSS and BJP members attacking a Dalit woman because she bathed in a river. Fact Crescendo says the clip showed a young woman being assaulted by a group, but its investigation found that the incident occurred in Pipalva village, Dhar district, Madhya Pradesh, and involved two young tribal women—not a Dalit woman attacked for bathing. The review reports that the women’s relatives assaulted them after becoming angry that the two women had been speaking with a man. It also says police registered a case and arrested seven people connected to the incident. This account supplies a different motive and perpetrators from those asserted in the viral caption. The review’s conclusion is that the video documented violence, but the claim attached to it misidentified the victims’ community and the reason for the assault, and falsely connected the incident to the RSS and BJP. Its described reverse-image search and the reported police action support that conclusion; the excerpt does not provide the linked reporting’s underlying details.

FACT CHECK:

Publisher’s rating: False

The review examined social-media posts identifying Amila Abeydeera, one of the suspects in an attempted theft of treasure from a small stupa near Sithulpawwa, as opposition leader Sajith Premadasa’s personal driver. It found that Abeydeera was arrested in connection with the incident, but that the personal-driver identification was wrong. To check the identification, the publisher compared the posts with the referenced Mawbima report, contacted Abeydeera’s brother, consulted several Yala safari-jeep associations and operators, and sought comment from Premadasa’s media secretary. The brother said Abeydeera was a Yala safari-jeep owner and a friend of Premadasa, not his personal driver. The safari groups and operators also identified him as a safari driver and jeep-business owner. The review added that a photograph of Abeydeera with Premadasa was taken when Premadasa attended a housewarming at Abeydeera’s brother’s home, and that other safari drivers had also taken friendly photographs with Premadasa. Premadasa’s media secretary said the opposition leader used his own vehicle for Yala visits and had two personal drivers who had worked for him for about ten years. The review therefore distinguishes Abeydeera’s arrest and his safari-driving work from the unsupported claim that he was Premadasa’s personal driver.

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim concerned a video presented as showing police in Ahmednagar, Gujarat, catching ATM robbers in a dramatic operation. The review says the footage shows masked men emerging from a shuttered building and struggling with police, but finds that this was not an actual robbery or arrest. Its investigation identifies the location as Ahmednagar in Maharashtra, not Gujarat: “মহারাষ্ট্রের আহমেদনগর পুলিশের একটি মক ড্রিলের ভিডিওকে ভুয়ো দাবির সাথে ভাইরাল করা হচ্ছে।” To trace the footage, the reviewers split the viral video into frames and searched them with Google reverse image search. They found a matching video on the official YouTube channel of Maharashtra Times, uploaded on 1 September. The review says the viral clip was cut from that five-minute video and that comparisons of screenshots showed the two were from the same event: “সংবাদ মাধ্যম ‘মহারাষ্ট্র টাইমস’-এর অফিসিয়াল ইউটিউব চ্যানেলে এর অনুসন্ধান পাই।” The review further reports that the exercise was organized by Shendi village’s Gram Suraksha Dal. It quotes Ahmednagar Local Crime Branch Inspector Anil Katke describing the footage as a mock drill conducted at a bank in Shendi on 31 August to examine security arrangements in different parts of the village: “এটি শেন্দি গ্রামের একটি ব্যাঙ্কে প্রদর্শিত একটি মক ড্রিলের ভিডিও। ঘটনাটি ৩১ অগস্টের।” Thus, footage of a staged exercise was circulated as evidence of a real bank robbery and police capture.

The warning concerned the B500, also known as the Schwarzwaldhochstrasse, a road through Germany’s Black Forest popular with motorcyclists. It alleged that people were pouring oil and soapy water onto the road to cause riders to crash. The review distinguishes that specific allegation from genuine hostility toward bikers reported in the area. Evidence of anti-motorcyclist messages or graffiti does not, by itself, establish that the road was being made hazardous with liquid.
