"As far as ISIS is concerned, when I took over, in November 2016, ISIS was all over the place. I’m the one, meaning it was me and this administration working with others, including the Kurds, that captured all of these people you’re talking about. Under President Obama it was a mess."

The post paired two photographs under the heading “Turkish Invasion,” making it appear to compare Turkey’s 1974 invasion of Cyprus with its then-current military operation in northern Syria. The review says the post circulated after Turkey began its Syria offensive on 9 October 2019 and before the 18 October ceasefire agreement. Its central correction is that the image captioned “Syria 2019” was not taken during that operation: it shows bereaved relatives after a suicide bombing in Syria in 2015. The black-and-white photograph, by contrast, does show people in Cyprus after the 1974 invasion. The review identifies the Syrian image as a photograph by AFP photographer Delil Souleiman. It reports that Getty Images’ photo database dates the photograph to 13 December 2015 and locates it at a memorial service in Qamishli (also rendered Kamischli). The review further says the bombing was claimed by the Islamic State. These details establish that the photo’s caption misdates the event by several years and wrongly associates the image with the 2019 Turkish campaign. For the Cyprus photograph, the review attributes the image to photographer Doros Partasides, citing reporting by the Daily Mail, and notes that Cyprus’s CNA also used it in coverage of events from 45 years earlier. Thus, the pairing combines a genuine image from the 1974 Cyprus invasion with a Syrian image from a 2015 bombing aftermath; it does not show both scenes as contemporaneous consequences of the 2019 operation.
The claim linked Baden-Württemberg’s large anti-terror exercise to an imminent wave of attacks, suggesting authorities were preparing for an actual series of attacks. The dpa review examined that specific exercise and reported that the state interior ministry described it as the largest exercise of its kind yet held in Germany. It involved 2,500 participants and took place on 19 October 2019, including a large-scale deployment in Stetten am kalten Markt and at several clinics in southwest Germany. The exercise scenario was a simulated attack in Konstanz, involving a car bomb, several heavily armed terrorists and dozens of deaths. The review distinguishes this training scenario from evidence of a real, expected attack: it reports that, when asked by dpa on 18 October, Baden-Württemberg Interior Ministry spokesman Renato Gigliotti said there was no expected terror wave and no indication that the security situation had changed. The review also notes a qualification that helps explain the exercise without supporting the claim of an imminent wave: Germany’s threat level had already been described as elevated for years. It cites the 2018 domestic intelligence report as saying the threat situation had “stabilised at a high level.”
Publisher’s rating: Falso
The claim concerned a social-media image said to show Arrán militants using a catapult in Plaça Catalunya during protests over the ruling in the procés case. Newtral reports that the image was being circulated on Twitter with that description, but says the image’s setting and date were misrepresented. The review also says Spanish media and news agencies’ published images did not show protesters using a catapult. [S1]
"I would not have withdrawn the additional thousand troops who are in Iraq, which are in retreat now, being fired on by Assad’s people."
Publisher’s rating: Wrong
The claim combines Biden’s opposition to withdrawing troops with the assertion that the troops were in retreat and being fired on by Assad’s forces. The review examined the firing allegation in the context of the U.S. withdrawal from northeastern Syria. It reported that Turkish militias, not Assad’s forces, had fired artillery near a U.S. military outpost, and that no U.S. forces were injured. It also said there had been no reports of Syrian government forces firing on American troops.
Now, the P.K.K., which is a part of the Kurds, as you know, is probably worse at terror and more of a terrorist threat in many ways than ISIS.
