Video of Indian aircraft ‘HAL Rudra’ shot down by Nepali forces
Publisher’s rating: FALSE
The post claimed that footage showed Indian aircraft “HAL Rudra” being shot down by Nepali forces after crossing the border to carry out airstrikes in Nepal. FACTLY’s review says the video was not connected to India or Nepal: it identified the visuals as footage of a Syrian Army helicopter shot down by rebel forces in Syria’s Idlib province in 2012. The review therefore distinguishes the video’s actual subject and setting from the event asserted in the post. (S1: “A video with the visuals of an air crash is being shared on social media claiming that Indian aircraft ‘HAL Rudra’ was shot down by Nepali forces when it crossed the border to conduct airstrikes on Nepali territories.”; “In the year 2012, A Syrian Army Helicopter was shot down by rebel forces ‘Free Syrian Army’ in the Syrian province of Idlib.”) To check the footage, the investigators performed reverse image searches on screenshots from the shared video. They report finding similar visuals in videos posted to the official YouTube channels of The Telegraph and On Demand News, whose descriptions linked the footage to the helicopter crash in Idlib. The review also says The Guardian published an article about that crash. (S1: “When we did a reverse image search of the screenshots in the posted video, similar visuals were found in the videos posted by ‘The Telegraph’ and ‘On Demand News’ News websites on their official YouTube channels.”; “The description accompanying these videos is that the visuals are related to the Helicopter crash that took place in the Syrian province Idlib.”; “Article related to this Helicopter crash was also published by ‘The Guardian’ in their website.”) As further provenance evidence, FACTLY notes that the video’s logo resembles the Free Syrian Army’s official logo. It concludes that the footage was from the 2012 Syrian incident, not a Nepal-related shootdown of an Indian aircraft. (S1: “Also, the logo seen on the video is similar to that of the official logo of ‘Free Syrian Army’.”; “To sum it up, an old video of shooting down of a Helicopter in Syria, is falsely shared as Indian aircraft HAL Rudra shot down by Nepal Forces.”)

Video of Indian soldiers being humiliated by Chinese troops in Ladakh
Publisher’s rating: FALSE
The claim concerns a video presented as showing Indian soldiers being humiliated by Chinese troops in Ladakh. FACTLY’s review says the footage instead shows a training exercise by members of the Bangladeshi army. It concludes that the video is unrelated to both the Indian army and Chinese troops. The review describes its conclusion as: “The video is of a training exercise of Bangladeshi army men.” To investigate the footage, the review says it used reverse image search on screenshots from the circulating video and found a longer version. That version had a title identifying it as Bangladesh Army training and was uploaded to YouTube on 3 October 2019. The review also says it compared soldiers’ insignia in the video with insignia of Bangladeshi soldiers, which it treated as confirming their affiliation. These checks support the identification of the people in the footage and contradict the claim that they are Indian soldiers facing Chinese troops in Ladakh. The review also notes visual details that it considered inconsistent with torture: it observed no resistance from the tied and gagged soldiers and says some appeared to smile. Those observations are supporting details; the review’s central identification rests on locating the longer, earlier-uploaded video and comparing insignia. Taken together, the evidence indicates that footage of Bangladeshi army training was recirculated with a false description of its subjects and setting.
