The claim concerns a viral video in which CNN journalists take cover while rocket fire is heard. A voice off camera appears to direct the crew, and social-media posts used that audio to allege CNN had staged a Hamas attack in Israel. The review compared the viral version with CNN’s original report, published on the network’s channels on October 9, 2023, including YouTube and CNN’s website. It says the original contains no voice giving directions to the journalists. The review concludes that the voice was added after CNN published its report, so the altered clip does not establish that CNN staged an attack. It identifies a logo in the upper-left corner of the viral version, reading “The Quartering,” that is absent from CNN’s original. The altered video also had a “Breaking news” banner and appeared on The Quartering’s X account and YouTube channel. The review further reports that The Quartering later clarified the video was a joke and that the voice-over was recorded by someone with no connection to CNN. It notes that other users subsequently shared the modified video as if it were genuine. The evidence described therefore concerns an edited version of a real CNN report, rather than evidence that CNN staged the events shown.

Publisher’s rating: False

The review investigated a post shared from a Facebook page presented as belonging to the Israel Defense Forces. The post purported to say that, because medical equipment and personnel were scarce, a decision had been made to bomb a Gaza hospital to end patients’ suffering. The review describes the allegation as the specific claim that IDF had admitted responsibility for the attack. The investigation says the Arabic-language Facebook page claiming to represent the IDF was inactive and unverified. It contrasts that page with the IDF’s usual practice of communicating through verified official social-media accounts and its website. The review also reports that it found no credible-news reporting confirming the post came from the IDF. These points challenge the attribution of the statement to the military, rather than establishing that the alleged admission was genuine. IDF”] As further context, the review says the IDF issued an official statement denying involvement in an airstrike on the hospital on the grounds described in the viral post. It reports that the IDF attributed the recent hospital explosion to a failed rocket launch by Hamas. The review also says the U.S. National Security Council assessed that Israel was not responsible for the deadly hospital incident on October 17. Taken together, the review presents the viral post as an unsupported impersonation claim, not an authentic IDF admission.

Publisher’s rating: Falso

The claim concerned a video shared on October 11, 2023, amid the Israel-Hamas war. Posts said it showed Palestinians carrying the body of a child killed by Israel, who then “resurrected” when sirens sounded. The review describes the footage itself: people carry a body in a bag on a board, set it down and flee when sirens sound; someone then emerges from the bag and runs away. It concludes that the footage does not show the claimed event and is not recent. To investigate the clip’s history, the review says it used a reverse image search on Google, starting from a screenshot. Results included two Arabic-language articles from March 2020, which, according to Google’s translation, described young Jordanians staging a funeral to evade COVID-19 curfew restrictions and leave their homes. The review also found a 2021 NewsMobile verification of the same video, which had then been falsely linked to clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces. The key provenance evidence reported is that the same recording had circulated at least since March 2020, before both the 2021 conflict and the 2023 war. The review therefore distinguishes what the footage depicts from the later captions attached to it: the video’s circulation history and the earlier explanation do not support identifying it as Palestinians carrying a child killed in recent Israeli attacks.
