How the answers frame Zelle
This snapshot, measured on 2026-09-29, covers 250 unbranded benchmark questions across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok, or 1,250 answers in total. Zelle was named in 223 of them. By provider: Grok 64 of 250, ChatGPT 50, Gemini 44, Claude 36 and Perplexity 29. The eight stored answers below are a sample of those appearances.
Zelle showed up most on account-protection questions (42% visibility) and money-movement-speed questions (32%). It was far less visible on innovation (6%), trust (11%) and employer questions (0%). In the sampled answers, fraud and complaints were the dominant setting. ChatGPT, asked which apps draw the most fraud complaints, said Zelle and Cash App are frequently mentioned in enforcement actions and reports, while noting it found no official cross-app ranking. Gemini's answer cited FTC 2023 fraud-report data and listed Zelle at 20% of consumer reports, behind PayPal and Cash App. Perplexity put Zelle among the leading complaint targets in online payments and pointed to a surge in complaints in early 2025 reported by Consumer Reports.
Scale is the second frame. ChatGPT, asked for the largest peer-to-peer app in America, said Zelle leads by payment volume and cited Zelle's own figures. It added that apps like Venmo and Cash App are usually compared by users rather than network volume. On new features, ChatGPT's answer ranked Zelle third, behind Cash App and Venmo. On buyer protection, Perplexity's table said Zelle offers no purchase protection for items that never arrive and is meant for people you know and trust.
When the answers credited Zelle for specific attributes, the counts were small and scattered: safety and compliance, financial performance and price and value once each, plus two entries tagged not substantive.
Zelle and ordinary person-to-person transfers on Cash App are poor choices for buying from strangers.
What the press is saying
PeakMetrics' news index recorded 7,021 mentions of Zelle in the last 30 days, with the brand in the headline of 125. The recent headlines mix several storylines: a community-based entrepreneurship accelerator launched with Community Development Investors, a Zelle dating report on rising costs, a possible Zelle bridge to India's UPI for NRIs and Indian professionals, and an Ohio lawyer who sent $550 to a stranger, a mistake that became a three-year court battle.
Most of these headlines come from press-release and syndication outlets, and several are promotional or lifestyle stories. Only the misdirected-payment story touches the risk themes the assistants raised.
Peer-to-peer (P2P) payment apps are frequent targets for scammers because transactions are processed almost instantly and are typically irreversible, functioning much like handing over cash.
The gap
The press and the assistants are describing two different Zelles. In the news sample, the brand appears in partnership, survey and cross-border announcements. In these answers, it appears mainly where the questions are about scams, complaints, irreversibility and missing buyer protection, with scale as the secondary point.
Coverage volume does not explain the difference. Zelle's 7,021 mentions trail PayPal's 28,552 and Block's 28,448, and it was named in 223 answers against 532 for PayPal and 508 for Block. Coinbase has 28,217 news mentions but was named in only 75 answers. Press volume and AI visibility are separate measures, and the same brand can sit differently on each.
What to watch
Comms teams should read the complaint and fraud framing as what these answers said in this snapshot, not as a settled ranking. Live answers vary between runs, and ChatGPT and Perplexity both stated that no single fixed ranking exists. The recurring themes are worth tracking: whether assistants cite Zelle's own figures for scale, and whether they describe it as unsuitable for purchases from strangers.
Also worth tracking are the low-visibility intents. Innovation, trust and employer questions rarely surfaced Zelle here, so the accelerator and product-adjacent news is not yet showing up in the answer set. The cited domains behind the fraud and complaint answers are the place to look for what could change the framing.
