How the answers frame xAI
This snapshot is from 29 September 2026. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity named xAI in 133 of 1,000 answers to 250 benchmark questions that never mentioned a brand. Grok's own count was not reported, so that figure covers the other four assistants only. By comparison, OpenAI was named in 694 of 1,000 answers and Anthropic in 662.
The five stored answers that named xAI place it in different contexts. ChatGPT listed it in a private-company valuation table at about $230B to $250B, between OpenAI and Databricks. Claude, asked about safety, named xAI only in a sentence about companies seeking defense partnerships. Perplexity, asked about foundation-model leaders, called xAI a "significant challenger" and named OpenAI, Google DeepMind and Anthropic as the clearest leaders.
Two Gemini answers carried the sharpest framing. On false information about real people, Gemini said Grok "has faced significant controversy" over manipulated images of real people. On the worst-reputation question, it listed xAI among companies with reputational challenges and cited the Grok deepfake litigation and lawsuits over the Colossus data center.
By question intent, xAI's visibility was highest for leadership questions (30%), avoid questions (27%) and trust questions (23%). It was lowest for developer ecosystem (4%) and value (3%). The credit tags are thin: two answers were tagged Safety & Compliance and one Not Substantive.

What the press is saying
PeakMetrics' news index logged 10,435 mentions of xAI in the last 30 days, 2,351 of them with the brand in the headline. That is well below OpenAI (155,993) and Anthropic (132,852), and below Nvidia (150,360) in this sector set.
The recent headlines in the sample are about Grok in use and in the market. One says the Pentagon is bringing on Grok and ChatGPT for military use. One reports Claude, ChatGPT and Grok being down on iPhone and web. One is a crypto outlet running a Grok prediction about Ethereum. One reports an antitrust complaint against Anthropic, OpenAI, xAI and Google over AI development.
…joining xAI and Mistral in actively seeking defense partnerships…
The gap
The press treats Grok mostly as a product: it goes down, it makes predictions, the military adopts it. The answers treat xAI mostly as a company to be ranked or judged. That means valuation tables, ethics scorecards, deepfake litigation and data-center permitting.
The defense theme shows up on both sides. Claude's safety answer noted xAI among companies actively seeking defense partnerships, and the press sample carries Pentagon headlines. The reputational items in the Gemini answers have no counterpart in the five sampled headlines. That does not show they are absent from the wider 10,435 mentions.
…significant challengers, but are harder to group with the leaders across every measure…
What to watch
This is a single snapshot, and live answers vary between runs, so it does not show a trend. Even so, a comms team could read three things from it. In the sampled answers, xAI is placed as a challenger and not among the leaders. Its safety and reputation framing comes from third-party scorecards and litigation that the assistants repeated. And its defense role appears in both the press and the answers.
The questions to track are whether safety and ethics questions keep pulling xAI in through scorecard and lawsuit language, and which cited domains supply that language. This snapshot covers corporate and reputational benchmark questions only, not consumer product queries.
